Suicide impacts millions of families and communities each year. 61% say they know someone who has thought about, attempted, or died by suicide, or have worried that someone might be in crisis. You might be the support someone needs. By reaching out and having open conversations, you can help make a difference. To learn more about how to support those in need, visit afsp.org/TalkAwayTheDark To learn more about the data collected in our recent public perception poll in partnership with the National Action Alliance for Suicide Prevention and the Suicide Prevention Resource Center, check out: SuicidePreventionNow.org

The first episode of AFSP's brand new podcast #StrongTalk is out now! 🎧 We all know him as Leon, the outspoken and hilarious character on Curb Your Enthusiasm, his appearances in the Barbershop and Spiderman film series, Real Husbands of Hollywood, and as a wildly talented comedian. But J.B. Smoove also has a lot to say about mental health. In this two-part episode “Funny Feelings with J.B. Smoove,” AFSP’s Vice President for Health Equity and Engagement, Vic Armstrong, talks to the big-hearted entertainer about: 🎥 Finding himself on stage – and finding himself in real life 😞 Dealing with disappointment 💙 Losing people to suicide, and how family and friends can come together after a loss Listen to the episode at afsp.org/StrongTalk or wherever you listen to podcasts!

As AFSP Oregon's 2024 #OutOfTheDarkness Community Walks season comes to an end, we wanted to say a big THANK YOU to everyone who walked with us this fall to #stopsuicide. Over 2,600 of you checked in at our walks across the state but we know we missed many of you in that count. Each of you made a difference by showing up, sharing your stories, remembering your loved ones, fundraising, and helping us bring suicide and mental health out of the darkness. We appreciate you so, so much. 💙 #MentalHealth #SuicidePrevention #MentalHealthAwareness #MentalHealthMatters

Suicide and opioid deaths overlap, but are not the same. In the past 20 years, opioid-related suicides have doubled, contributing to a significant public health concern, and the role of opioids in suicide and accidental overdose death is not well understood. AFSP has funded research on this very topic, but we still need to learn more. More about this #Science2StopSuicide from Dr. Ryoko Susukida of Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health: https://lnkd.in/ePvJMe39

Grief knows no timeline. 💙 Remembering to be patient and considerate as survivors navigate their lifelong journey of healing is crucial to making them feel safe. Refraining from judgment and offering support can provide much-needed relief to a suicide loss survivor. If you know a suicide loss survivor, encourage them to attend a #SurvivorDay event in their area: afsp.org/SurvivorDay
