The EU Competitiveness Compass identifies the #bioeconomy as a growth engine for its competitiveness potential across many sectors! Driven by innovative technologies, new business models and social innovations the bioeconomy is a key competitiveness driver for bio-based materials, biomanufacturing, biochemicals, and agri-biotech sectors! Presented by the European Commission today, this strategic document envisions a Europe where innovative technologies and clean products are developed, manufactured, and marketed, all while progressing toward carbon neutrality and becoming the first climate-neutral continent by 2050. CBE JU-funded projects like AFTER-BIOCHEM concretely show how the bio-based sector can translate these ambitions into measurable results, from cutting CO₂ emissions to reducing dependencies from fossil fuels, from setting up circular biobased value chains to providing new incomes for farmers. The French start-up AFYREN NEOXY’s flagship biorefinery in Saint-Avold, France, converts side streams from the sugar industry and organic waste into high-value bio-based organic acids. Supported by €20 million in funding from CBE JU, the AFTERBIOCHEM project’s process is #circular, #sustainable, and zero-waste, reducing CO₂ emissions by 80%. At full capacity, the biorefinery will produce 16,000 tonnes of organic acid per year, providing sustainable alternatives to fossil-derived ingredients in food, personal care, and industrial chemicals. A lot has to be done to allow more companies to thrive, and the Commission is focussing on removing regulatory and administrative barriers, on facilitating access to funding and on promoting skills for competitiveness and quality jobs. All these measures echo the requests from the CBE JU stakeholders, putting the bioeconomy at the centre of the European green transition. CBE JU looks forward – with the European Commission and the Bio-based Industries Consortium (BIC) - to contributing to these ambitious objectives over the next years, further supporting both de-fossilisation and competitiveness through innovation in Europe. https://lnkd.in/eTjQ7ayT EU Science, Research and Innovation EU Environment and Climate EU Business John Bell Rob Beekers Kristin Schreiber Diego Canga Fano Dirk Carrez Marco Rupp Agata Kotkowska Emmanuelle Maire Peter Wehrheim Virginia Puzzolo Nicolas Sordet Stéphane Séjourné Circular Bio-based Europe Joint Undertaking (CBE JU) Hans Ingels Astrid Ladefoged
