As a former founder and an investor/advisor of many hard tech startups, I understand firsthand the critical role government and incubation programs play in bridging the gap between academic research and VC-fundable startups and beyond, as deep tech innovations typically require more time and resources to reach market readiness, and often can only be achieved through (international) partnerships of companies with complementary capabilities.
We are excited to have stakeholders from the government, research institutions, leading incubation programs and startup founders join us in Taipei next week to discuss challenges and opportunities facing deep tech startups, share best practices for fostering international partnerships, and build a global innovation ecosystem that can help deep tech companies scale and thrive.

At the Institute for NanoSystems Innovation (NanoSI) at Northeastern University, we’re working to help university researchers turn inventions into successful startups. Next weekend I’m headed to Taiwan for our US-Taiwan Workshop on Deep Tech Innovation and Partnerships, a workshop I co-organized together with serial entrepreneur and early-stage VC investor Michelle Meng-Hsiung Kiang and our Taiwan-based partners at the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI)(工業技術研究院, 工研院) and Taiwan’s Small and Medium Enterprise and Startup Administration (SMESA). With National Science Foundation (NSF) support, we’re bringing about 25 people from US deep tech startups, incubators, academia, and government to meet their Taiwan counterparts to share ideas about the current climate for deep tech startups and explore ideas for US-Taiwan partnerships. We aim to make this the first in a series of workshops to promote international partnerships for US deep tech startups.
