🤔 As #DíadeMuertos gains popularity across the U.S., we’re seeing more public celebrations, altars, and events representing this beloved Mexican holiday. 🤔 This interest in other cultures’ traditions is a powerful gesture toward inclusion and community. However, as we honor #DíadeMuertos, it's essential to approach it with #respect for its heritage and a deeper understanding of its meaning. 🤔 While the vibrant colors and imagery captivate, Day of the Dead is much more than a visual spectacle. It’s a time-honored celebration deeply rooted in Mexican and Indigenous traditions, paying homage to loved ones who have passed and connecting families across generations. 🤔 Over-commercialization and surface-level representations risk diluting its significance and perpetuating stereotypes rather than honoring its depth. 📣 Here’s how we can embrace Día de los Muertos respectfully: 1️⃣ 𝐎𝐰𝐧 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 – Explore reputable sources (libraries, webinars, or local experts) to understand the holiday’s origins, meanings, and practices. For example, learn the correct name and pronunciation, and understand that Día de los Muertos is more than “Mexican Halloween.” 2️⃣ 𝐈𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐬 – Show genuine interest by asking, “May I ask about this tradition? I’d love to understand more about you and your heritage.” Be prepared to listen and appreciate the stories shared. 3️⃣ 𝐁𝐞 𝐌𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐟𝐮𝐥 𝐨𝐟 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐂𝐡𝐨𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐬 – Consider why you’re drawn to celebrate this tradition. Is it out of respect for the culture and its significance, or simply for the aesthetic? Thoughtfully reflect on whether incorporating certain elements might oversimplify or commodify a sacred celebration. ✴️ Cultural humility is not a destination but a journey of growth and understanding. By celebrating Día de los Muertos with #awareness, we contribute to a more inclusive society that honors the richness of diverse cultures without diminishing their essence. 💥 Join ALPFA Austin for our Day of the Dead celebration this Wednesday October 30th at 6:30 pm at Santa Rita Cantina. We will be setting an Altar or Ofrenda for everyone to enjoy while we also celebrate the end of our first Mentoring Program. 💥 Don't miss this amazing opportunity to learn more about this beloved tradition! Sign up here: https://lu.ma/l1ujcr29 And in the meantime, enjoy these photos from San Miguel de Allende during Día de Muertos celebrations. #leadershipdevelopment #culturalcompetency #latinxleaders #alwayslearning #sisepuede #culturaltraditions #inclusiveleadership
