#ALRIGH2TMilestones 🎯 | Over a year in and we’ve reached a key milestone: the Pre-analysis of Refuelling Technological Concepts. 🔹 What has this phase involved? ✅ Conducting a SWOT analysis to compare two refuelling approaches, identifying their strengths and limitations. The #ALRIGH2T team has also developed #LH2 demand models based on medium- and short-haul aircraft routes from Milan Malpensa and Paris airports. These models project future LH2 requirements up to 2035, laying the foundation for infrastructure planning. This is just the beginning! De Gennaro is leading groundbreaking research in Vienna to decarbonize aviation by moving away from petroleum-based fuels and exploring the potential of liquid hydrogen (LH₂). The article highlights key challenges, including: 🔹 Storing Hydrogen (H₂) safely and efficiently 🔹 Extreme Conditions for LH₂, which must be kept at -253°C. 🔹 Technical Challenges in Aviation, from refueling to onboard storage.   Despite the hurdles, De Gennaro is driven by the pursuit of innovation: "So much has not yet been researched in liquid hydrogen. In cryogenic technology, we are always waiting for surprises".   The EU-funded #ALRIGH2T Project is paving the way for safe and efficient LH₂ refueling in future aviation. The consortium partners recently gathered in Vienna, Austria, for their General Assembly, where they shared key achievements:   🔵 Pre-analysis of refuelling technological concepts. 🔵 Prototype pump for aircraft refuelling with subcooled #LH2 is progressing, with mechanical design finalized and dynamic simulations underway. 🔵 Significant advances in the direct refuelling system, including the completion of the SAG Basic Tank design, sensor integration, and control system setup. The coupling strategy for integrating different system models has been defined, alongside the establishment of the core setup for the SAG test.   🔜 Next Steps: Discussions are now underway with ENAC - Ente Nazionale per l'Aviazione Civile for upcoming demonstrations at Milan Malpensa Airport. A “sandbox procedure” will soon be activated to define the testing sequence. ✈️♻️ IfES-EES at the first joint GOLIAT and ALRIGH2T workshop. Last week, our colleague Timo Schelm joined more than 50 members of the consortia of the GOLIAT - Horizon Europe project and ALRIGH2T EU Project in Vienna. Both projects facilitate 𝘀𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗻 𝗹𝗶𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗱 𝗵𝘆𝗱𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗲𝗻 (𝗟𝗛𝟮). The projects both focus on developing and testing LH2 refuelling infrastructure and technologies for aviation, including ground operations, certification, and economic assessments for large-scale commercial use at airports.   The joint workshop served to share methods between the projects, to give updates on results and discuss joint activities. Timo presented his progress in the GOLIAT work package "Operational and techno-economic assessment", together with Pieter-Jan Proesmans from the TU Delft. The work package aims to determine LH2 fuel costs at airports and refuelling system costs for different LH2 supply-chain scenarios. Key activities in the work package include: ➡️Exploring the possibility of 𝗲𝘅𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗛𝟮 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝘃𝗶𝗮 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗵𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀, to complement airports' own LH2 infrastructures. ➡️𝗨𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝘆 𝗤𝘂𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗟𝗛𝟮 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗹𝘆 𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘁𝘀: For example, depending on the underlying assumptions, projected LH2 costs in 2030 vary between 2.53 $/kg LH2 and 5.93 $/kg LH2 in a location in central Europe with low renewable potential.   We thank the hosts AIT Austrian Institute of Technology for organising the successful workshop and look forward to further work and collaboration in advancing sustainable aviation. ✈️ #AviationIndustry #LiquidHydrogen #CleanAviation #GreenTech #ZeroEmissions #Hydrogen #SustainableAviation #HorizonEurope Photo 3 by ALRIGH2T Project

Building a long-term collaboration! ✈️ On January 22nd and 23rd, we joined forces with our sister project GOLIAT - Horizon Europe project to host our first joint workshop at the AIT Austrian Institute of Technology facilities. This strategic event was an opportunity to present the objectives and progress of both leading European initiatives. The workshop featured insightful panels that led to engaging discussions on critical topics such as: 🔵Analysis and authorization procedures for proposed demonstrations. 🔵 Techno-economic assessment challenges. 🔵 Identifying standardization gaps and building common roadmaps. 🔵 Technological and shared challenges. 🙌 We are incredibly grateful to the more than 50 participants from both consortia who traveled to Vienna to make this event a success. Both projects are well-aligned and moving forward on the same path. 🤝 More joint activities are on the horizon, covering specific topics and coordinated communication efforts to position our projects in the liquid hydrogen and aircraft sectors. We’ve wrapped up two incredibly productive days at the #ALRIGH2T General Assembly. 🔹 Day 2 Highlights: Our discussions focused on the progress of the Demonstration Activities, where we analyzed key advancements and shared insights. Additionally, we tackled the critical environmental, safety, and regulatory aspects essential to ensuring the project’s success. Our team also presented the communication and dissemination strategy, emphasizing its impact in engaging our target audiences and maximizing the outcomes of #ALRIGH2T. 🔹 Today’s Collaboration: We continued with a joint workshop alongside our sister project, GOLIAT - Horizon Europe project.
