Plants and people are our thing. We’re the largest succulent and cactus grower in the world.

About us

Nestled in the hills of north San Diego County, Altman Plants is home to over 1,025 unique varieties of cacti and succulents. In 1975, Altman Plants was simply a backyard hobby for Ken and Deena Altman. Their nurturing care and passion for each individual plant set them apart and quickly grew the business to the industry front-runner it is today. Since those humble beginnings, with the help of a team of renowned plant breeders and dedicated staff, Altman Plants is now one of the largest nurseries in the country and the largest succulent grower in the world. We strive to provide high-quality living treasures, for collectors and retailers alike.

  • The Texas Governor’s mansion in Austin is festively decorated with Altman Plants-grown poinsettias, grown and delivered by our Texas team. The Governor’s choice of poinsettias for 2024: 8” red, with some 8” pink added in the house chambers. Our Independent Sales Rep Greg Meadlin coordinated what was a big team effort. Greg has been working with the Governor’s mansion for over 10 years. Courtesy photos #poinsettias #holidaydecor #goteam

  • We're incredibly thankful to have a field team that works diligently to ensure that the plants from our farms are showcased with care to create beautiful garden centers for our retail partners. Lone Star State team members Dylan Howe and Susan Mayfield, both GCM Leads, are two such Altman Plants employees. The company's A-Team Service Awards program honors field team members for embodying one or more of the company's seven core values: (1) joy, (2) unity, (3) integrity, (4) consistency, (5) excellence, (6) growth, and (7) accountability. Dylan, who covers areas in Texas such as Cleburne, Stephenville, and Azle, was recognized for demonstrating growth, consistency, and integrity. "Dylan has done a phenomenal job of keeping up with each store, showing integrity and consistency across the whole market. He has grown in his ability to manage his time and the demands in each store and in his communication skills this year. His growth has allowed him to have a great year in his market, developing trust and building stronger relationships with his stores," GCM Area Manager Sara Shaw said. Susan, who covers West Texas areas such as Abilene, Sweetwater, and San Angelo, was recognized for demonstrating integrity, consistency, and accountability. "Susan is the market lead for my most outlying market. She continuously demonstrates integrity, consistency, and accountability, both with her performance and communication, to me and her market. She has a great reputation in her stores and works hard to maintain relationships and our standards in the stores," Sara said. Congrats, Dylan and Sara, and thank you for representing Altman Plants so well. Hearty congrats to our other recent A-Team Service Award winners: Alexis Martinez Amy Casto Armando Sandoval Carrie Rojas Christina Jackson Jonathan Oakley-Murdoch Kenny Torres Kylia Green Mackenzie Lewis Madeline Trahan Nancy Urbina Patricia Rivera Richard "Shane" Haver Sabrina Good #goteam #careerswithplants #teamawards #employeeachievement

  • The safety of our drivers and others on the road as well as the safe, reliable transport of our plants are of critical importance to the company. Underscoring that commitment, each September our Lake Mathews, Calif., nursery stages its Truck Driver Rodeo, coinciding with National Truck Driver Appreciation Week. Forty-two of our drivers recently got the chance to demonstrate their skills during the 10th annual event. Big-time congrats to Class A driver Adolfo Ziranhua Martinez from our Fallbrook nursery. Adolfo drove off, so to speak, with the overall championship. Lake Mathews bus driver Rigoberto Estrada took the bobtail prize. The rodeo's skills portion is a timed event involving a series of challenging maneuvers and navigating obstacles. Pre-trip inspections are also part of the competition. The company’s national Penske account rep served as the judge. A Penske truck safety professional gave classroom instruction on truck maintenance and road safety to all the participants. The rodeo ended with a barbecue rib feast. Our drivers are an integral part of the Altman Plants team. The rodeo is a great opportunity for the company to say thank you, while the drivers have a chance to demonstrate what makes them terrific, thoughtful team members behind the wheel. • We'd like to evoke school-age memories by calling a recent offsite outing by our Lake Mathews, Calif., availability team a field trip, but it really was more of a garden center trip. Literally. The team walked three different customer garden centers in nearby Corona to help target areas they could improve as an availability team and find opportunities for the company as a whole, said Andrew Kosciuk, Southern California Availability Manager.
