I recently watched Jamie Foxx ‘s recent Netflix performance and was moved by the seriousness of it and his recognition of his miraculous recovery. Many people who have strokes aren’t so lucky. Black Americans have a much higher rate of strokes!!! Understanding the warning signs and seriousness is critical in saving lives. It is even more important to focus on understanding risk factors & prevention. Hypertension and diabetes two prevalent diseases in our communities are leading risk factors. 80%of chronic diseases can be prevented by eating healthy, exercising & reducing your stress, preventing cardiovascular disease and strokes!!! Let’s do our part to get our communities healthier! Have healthy foods available, nutrition education & safe places to exercise. In college I studies nutrition while in summer school at Harvard University under Dr. Jean Mayer, Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University was named after him. That course changed my life! Thanks to my sister, registered dietician, public health expert & attorney, Hilda Whittington, who insisted I take nutrition because doctors no little about nutrition & she is correct still to this day! At UAMS - University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, I founded our culinary medicine program to teach nutrition & healthy food preparation to medical students & other health professionals. Kudos to my colleagues and staff to continues the mission!!! https://lnkd.in/exsJPUc Thanks Dr. Timothy S. Harlan, M.D. for his leadership & founding of the American College of Culinary Medicine, leading the effort in academic center’s & hospitals across the nation! #nutrition #nutritionscience #preventivehealth #healthylifestyle #strokeprevention #heartfiseaseprevention https://lnkd.in/gpqyfn64
Oscar-winning actor and comedian Jamie Foxx is opening up for the first time about what landed him in Atlanta’s Piedmont Hospital for nearly a month after suffering a brain bleed that led to a stroke. Morehouse School of Medicine Associate Professor of Neurology Dr. Chantale Branson is an expert on strokes, which Black patients are twice as likely to experience than white patients. In an interview with WSB-TV, Dr. Branson discussed the warning signs of brain bleeds and strokes as well as what to do if you or someone you know are having symptoms. Any discussion about the power of food to bring us together and promote better health is incomplete without discussing how our food is produced. Joining the Urban Harvest team in a celebration of women leaders in agriculture was a true honor. Thank you for the warm welcome.

It has been a busy and FUN few weeks at the Corewell health Center for Wellness. We have successfully launched both our culinary medicine programs for the remainder of the year! Our first class, ‘Centered’ aims at providing nutrition education and recipes for hypertension. Our second program, ‘Sprouts’ is our adolescent cooking program which addresses strengthening independence in the kitchen, introduction to nutrition education and facilitation of behavioral changes. Without our amazing team we couldn’t have done this so quickly! All of our programs address nutritional insecurity in the community, as there’s always fresh food to take home. #communitynutrition #registereddietitian Thank you to the wonderful dietetic intern, Man Sze for helping us! Along with Sarah B. Gendernalik, DO MPH Myla Jackson , Angelique Madison our NP, Our chef, Cameron Shepard, our community health workers and nursing staff. ☺️ Corewell Health Corewell Health Lakeland Hospitals
