“We failed her miserably. She left OR nursing altogether.” The healthcare industry is facing a critical nursing shortage, and inadequate training is driving many nurses away from the profession.💔 During the pandemic Cynthia L. Garza, DNP, RN, CNOR, was the Director of Surgical and Endoscopy Services in a brand new 59-bed hospital with 3 ORs, 2 endoscopy suites, and a cath lab—and the facility lost 60% of its perioperative nurses. Recruitment efforts for experienced OR nurses were falling short, so Cynthia tried to onboard a nurse with no prior OR experience. Without a structured framework, the attempt failed. This experience drove home an important lesson: nurse retention requires support, structure, and teamwork. Cynthia rebuilt her approach by collaborating with surgical teams and using evidence-based onboarding strategies to create a more sustainable future for her team. ✨ With tools like Periop 101, she found a way to provide the consistency and guidance her nurses needed to succeed. The results? 💡 Two nurses trained during the program are still thriving years later. 📉 Turnover costs reduced significantly. 💙 A stronger team, better prepared to handle challenges. Cynthia’s story is a powerful reminder of the impact thoughtful training and leadership can have—not just on nurse retention, but on patient care and team morale. Share your stories of nursing retention success and failure in the comments below. #nurselife #ORnurse #Nursing #Nurses #Nurse #Periop #Perioperative #PeriopNurse #ORLife

🔊 Addressing Noise in the Operating Room Noise is an emerging public health hazard, with the CDC estimating that 22 million workers in the U.S. are exposed to potentially damaging workplace noise annually. In healthcare settings, high noise levels threaten the safety of both workers and patients. Quiet environments in hospitals are crucial for patient healing and comfort, and they enable medical staff to work and communicate effectively. The WHO and EPA recommend hospital noise levels be no greater than 35 dBA and 45 dBA, respectively. However, OR noise often exceeds these levels, leading to: - distractions, - reduced work performance, - ineffective communication - negative health effects on staff, including stress, cardiovascular disease, and hearing loss. A recent quality improvement project aimed to understand the impact of high noise levels during critical phases of surgery and how staff perceptions influence noise-mitigation efforts. The project found that OR noise levels during anesthesia emergence and surgical counts were significantly higher than recommended, highlighting the need for effective noise-reduction strategies. How noisy is your OR, and how is it impacting patient care and your health? 🚨 Tips for working with travel nurses 🚨 The health care staffing shortage is at an all-time high. Health care workers are burnt out and exhausted, and many times, the solutions seemingly being offered are pizza parties or pulling in travel staff to help. Which would you pick? 🍕🧳 Travel nurses and other health care specialists are stepping in to fill gaps for overworked staff, ensuring patients still receive the care they need during these tough times. It's important to remember that these travelers are not at fault for pay disparities—this is an issue for health care leaders to address on a national scale. While travelers provide much-needed support, they can also cause some conflict within units. Permanent staff may feel frustrated that travelers are paid more but may have less experience. However, it's crucial to recognize that travelers are there to give permanent staff a break and are not there to stay forever. Effective conflict resolution is key. Here are some strategies: 1. Communication: Use active listening, avoid interruptions, and use “I” statements to foster value in conversations. 2. Identifying Solutions: Focus on factual data and agree on alternatives that benefit both parties. 3. Be Kind: Invite new travel staff to lunch, get to know them, and promote unity within the unit. Healthcare is hard. Staffing a unit is hard. But by working together and supporting each other, we can navigate these challenging times 💪❤️. For our travel nurse audience, what other tips do you suggest?
