The Asia Pacific University of Technology and Innovation (APU), in collaboration with the Lanka Education and Research Network (LEARN), has significantly contributed to a landmark event in the Sri Lankan education sector by leading a series of Generative AI (Gen-AI) workshops. These workshops, part of the transformative AIDE (AI for Innovative Design & Education) initiative, were held in the scenic city of Kandy, marking a pivotal moment in the integration of Gen-AI into educational practices. From March 11 to 14, 2024, the APU team, under the patronage of the APU UNESCO-Chair featured key members and partners such as Dr Vaikunthan Rajaratnam, Ts. Jonathan Kovilpillai, and Fahd Raza, who conducted the AIDE workshops. These sessions attracted over 300 participants, encompassing a diverse range of educational professionals, including academics, researchers, and schoolteachers, underlining the widespread interest and potential applicability of Gen-AI across various educational strata. The workshops were meticulously designed to cater to a spectrum of applications within the educational domain, covering AI Academic Writing, AI Learning Design, AI Research, AI in Administrative Efficiency, AI for Health Professionals, and AI TEACH for school educators. Each session was tailored to empower participants with practical knowledge and skills in Gen-AI, enabling them to leverage this cutting-edge technology to enhance their teaching, research, and administrative endeavours. The involvement of APU in this initiative indicates the institution's commitment to pioneering the integration of technology in education, reflecting its leadership in innovation and digital learning. The success of the AIDE workshops is a testament to the university's expertise and its role in shaping future educational paradigms. APU's contribution extends beyond the workshops, as evidenced by the initiation of a "Train the Trainer" program aimed at further disseminating Gen-AI knowledge across Sri Lanka. This initiative is set to catalyse a nationwide movement to equip educators with the skills necessary to navigate and thrive in a rapidly evolving digital world. The impact of these workshops and the ensuing initiatives herald a new era for Sri Lankan education, one where Gen-AI becomes a cornerstone in the development of educational practices, research methodologies, and administrative processes. APU is proud to be at the forefront of this educational revolution, facilitating a knowledge-sharing ecosystem that promises to elevate the national educational standards and foster a generation of educators and students who are adept at harnessing the power of AI. As we look to the future, APU remains committed to collaborating with educators, policymakers, and technology experts across ASEAN and beyond, to realize the full potential of Gen-AI in shaping the future of education.
