Regardless of how incredible a trip may be, there is nothing quite like the feeling of returning home after a long journey. That is exactly how I feel every December when I attend the holiday luncheon at the American Public Works Association Northern California Chapter. I am blessed to represent Region 8 of American Public Works Association on the national board of directors. The region consists of over 5,000 public works professionals in 11 chapters throughout California, Nevada and Hawaii. I try to attend as many events as I can throughout the year, but the schedule really picks up from mid-November to mid-December. Lots of chapter holiday parties, but the last one I always attend is this event, where I got my start at APWA way back in the early 2000s. Congratulations to the incoming chapter president and my former boss, Brian Balbas, who took me to my very first APWA meeting way back in 1997. And congratulations to outgoing president Carlos Melendez, P.E. who kickoff a new chapter branch in the Santa Rosa / Sonoma area during his term in office. Best Single Takeaway: The chapter has an amazing historian in John Mercurio. He gave a talk about the history of the chapter at the luncheon. Two years ago, he and a few other elder chapter statesmen put together a 75th year chapter anniversary book. It is amazing! I cannot believe the information they dug up on the chapter. They have a page dedicated to each of the 75 years, and the corresponding president. I understand 2012 was an especially cool year.  In the years since I have tried to collect signatures from as many past presidents as I can. I would like to dedicate this post to page 75, my dear friend and past chapter president (2018) Tracy Bartlett who passed away last year. About the Chapter: Founded in 1947, the chapter was the first located west of the Mississippi and one of the oldest in the entire nation. It has close to 700 memberships and covers 10 of the 58 counties in California.
