Assaia’s 2024 Turnaround Benchmark Report analyses gate utilization, revealing how airports of varying sizes and hub statuses differ in turnaround efficiency: Smaller, non-hub airports handle quicker turnarounds for narrowbody and mixed stands due to fewer connecting flights, reducing complexity. Conversely, large hub airports achieve faster turnarounds for widebody flights, as home carriers can better optimize fleet operations. In smaller airports, widebody aircraft often face delays waiting for return flights, slowing turnaround times. Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/eXC6C58f #turnaroundbenchmarkreport

PAX International Magazine recently covered our 2024 Turnaround Benchmark Report, marking the second year we've released this comprehensive analysis. For the first time, we now have a reference point to compare system performance between 2023 and 2024—and the results are worth noting. 💡 Key Highlights: ✈️ Ground delays were reduced by 6%, leading to a 4% improvement in turnaround times. ⏳ Average turns per day per stand increased from 4 to 5. “This improvement highlights significant efficiency gains for both airlines and airports,” shared Hen. For airlines, every minute of delay translates to increased costs. For airports, gate capacity is a critical constraint. Building additional gates is often expensive, time-consuming, or simply not feasible due to space limitations. By optimizing turnaround times, airports can maximize gate capacity and achieve more turns with the same infrastructure, unlocking cost savings and operational efficiencies. #TurnaroundBenchmarkReport #OptimizedTurnaround #EfficiencyMatters

The turnaround process, the critical period in which an aircraft is readied for its next flight, exemplifies complexity. This process involves coordinating multiple teams and handling various tasks, all of which must flow seamlessly to avoid issues. Despite recent advances, many airports still depend on manual oversight to manage turnarounds. AI offers transformative solutions, providing data-driven capabilities that streamline operations and support rapid, informed decision-making. By leveraging AI, airports and ground handlers can achieve a new level of accuracy, and resilience, setting the stage for an era of seamless, safe, and sustainable air travel. Read more in December's Ground Handling International interview with Christiaan Hen.

Ground delay data from Assaia’s latest Turnaround Benchmark report highlights significant differences in operational efficiency across continents. Europe’s common-use gate model offers more flexibility and efficiency, with lower average delays: 3.9 minutes for narrow-body and 6.1 minutes for mixed stands. North America's airline-operated gate model results in a notable 10.7-minute delay for narrow-bodies but a narrower gap for wide-bodies at 2.3 minutes. This data underscores the impact of gate ownership on operational performance and turnaround efficiency.
