Supporting Prosecutors to Create Safer Communities Through a More Just and Equitable Legal System
About us
The Association of Prosecuting Attorneys (APA) is a national 501(c)(3) organization headquartered in Washington, D.C made up of elected and appointed prosecuting attorneys from throughout the nation. APA's mission is to support and enhance the effectiveness of prosecutors in their efforts to help make our communities safer. APA serves as a prosecutorial and criminal justice think tank that provides valuable resources such as training and technical assistance to prosecutors to develop proactive and innovative prosecutorial practices that prevent crime, ensure equal justice, and help make our communities safer. APA acts as a global forum for the exchange of ideas, allowing prosecutors to collaborate with all criminal justice partners, conducting timely and effective technical assistance and providing access to technology for the enhancement of the prosecutorial function. In addition, APA serves as an advocate for prosecutors on emerging issues related to the administration of justice and development of partnerships. APA keeps prosecutors informed about and involved with changes in both law and practice through regular training sessions, comprehensive publications, legislative analysis, and amicus activity. Contact us for any of your technical assistance needs! Our expertise and broad community partnerships can help you achieve your criminal justice goals.

Findings show that state prosecutor offices charged 78% of all felony matters reviewed in 2020, and 67% of all felony matters concluded by state prosecutor offices were adjudicated following a plea bargain." This comprehensive report breaks down attorneys and other staff within these offices showing a continual increase in staff since 1992. Read the entire report here: https://lnkd.in/gnTvVyQs

Along with the work done to provide prosecutors’ offices with varying levels of data visualization and technical support, APA and Measures for Justice have worked closely with the National Prosecutor Dashboard Advisory Group made up of prosecutors, researchers, national organizations, and foundations inhabiting the public prosecutorial data platform space. “National Prosecutorial Dashboards: Lessons Learned, Themes and Categories for Consideration,” was produced through this collaboration, a comprehensive guide to assist prosecutors with implementing public-facing data visualizations. This document contains lessons learned, themes and categories for consideration, and links to external resources, including existing public-facing dashboards. https://lnkd.in/epSAeYPq

Over the next month, we will be featuring our resources for data transparency. One of those is Prosecutorial Performance Indicators (PPI), in partnership with Florida International University and Loyola University Chicago. PPIs are a suite of modern indicators to be used as a tool to measure effectiveness, efficiency, and fairness. PPIs are measured under 3 goals: capacity & efficiency, community safety & well-being, fairness & justice, and 9 objectives: organization & staff capacity, addressing serious crime, racial & ethnic differences, time & resource prioritization, protecting & serving victims, minimizing unnecessary punitiveness, timeliness of case processing, community outreach & engagement, and prosecutorial ethics & integrity. Have you used PPI? Does your office use a data collection resource? We would love to hear from you and how it has benefited your office and community. Please email our Program Coordinator, April Doherty (april.doherty@apainc.org) with your thoughts and ideas.
