(Views are my own) Deputy Bureau Chief & Cryptocurrency Investigations Coordinator, Major Economic Crimes at Queens District Attorney's Office| Former Federal Prosecutor
I am incredibly proud of the amazing team at the QDA Cybercrime and Cryptocurrency Unit! Section Chief Liz Speck, Sgt. Linda Den Dekker, and Sr. ADA Catherine Jahn (the LLC) are truly among the best in the business. I am honored to lead them. This recent case is another example of the outstanding work being done by local law enforcement and the collaborative efforts within the "crypto community" fostered by the vision of individuals like Erin West at the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office and Mike Kelly at the Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office, who have created crucial educational and networking platforms that enhance the capabilities of local law enforcement agencies. As the borders of crime have expanded to the point of disappearing in the cybercime space, having a network to rely on is critical. To that end, a HUGE thank you to Robert Romero and the too many to name agents in the Division of Law Enforcement at the California Department of Justice for their assistance in bringing this case to conclusion. I also want to acknowledge and thank Jason Trager and FTI Consulting for providing invaluable expertise in blockchain and cryptocurrency matters. Prosecutors need to be prepared not just to assist in the investigation, but also to litigate these issues. Leveraging private sector experts as we build our rosters in the public domain is critical to achieving that mission. In today's criminal landscape it is imperative for law enforcement agencies at all levels to prioritize enhancing their capabilities in cryptocurrency and cyber disciplines. This recent case, along with the great work being done by other local offices like the Brooklyn District Attorney's Office, the Manhattan District Attorney's Office, and Office of the New York State Attorney General, as well as other agencies across the United States, hopefully serves as an example of this and what is possible. Re-entry programs are essential for supporting justice-involved individuals as they reintegrate into our borough, providing them with critical resources like job training, mental health services, and programs for stable housing. By helping residents rebuild and rejoin their communities sustainably, we recreate safer, more prosperous neighborhoods for all of Brooklyn.
Thank you to Governor Kathy Hochul for investing record-level funding in 20 Re-Entry Task Forces statewide and to our partner agencies and organizations for their commitment to supporting their fellow New Yorkers and giving them true second chances. We’d also like to give HUGE shout out to our colleagues from the DCJS Office of Probation and Correctional Alternatives for their stellar work coordinating our first-ever Re-Entry Task Force Forum and for the training and technical assistance they provide to our local partners across New York State.
