The conventional aluminum extrusion press has maintained a consistent design and function for over 50 years, despite industry advancements in AI, IOT integration, and 3D printing for customized profiles. While these technologies enhance operational efficiency, the press mechanisms have largely remained unchanged. Atomic13 is revolutionizing the extrusion industry by industrializing shear extrusion at a commercial scale. This innovation addresses challenges like incorporating higher scrap metal concentrations in billet compositions, extruding and tempering hard alloys such as AA7075, and creating uniform and unique microstructures. It also enables the development of high-performance alloys and composites beyond traditional press capabilities. As Atomic13 expands its engineering team to scale up its proprietary technology, we are excited to announce Jason Adams, MSc as a new Technical Advisor. With a background as the former technical VP and most recently the operations lead at Norsk Hydro, overseeing the largest extrusion facility in the Western Hemisphere, Jason brings extensive expertise in process optimization, quality control, and alloy development. His contributions will play a crucial role in advancing our commercial operations. Jason adds, “This novel process innovation has the potential to redefine the industry by expanding the capabilities of extrusion products while lowering cost and significantly reducing carbon footprint. The process is aligned with historical trends in the flat rolled steel industry with the advent of the mini-mill concept. Entire processes could be eliminated or reduced in their cycle time and cost of operation. And the metallurgy of the process is very elegant! It’s an exciting new technology to watch as Atomic13 takes it to industrialization.” Atomic13 is completing the detailed engineering of its proprietary press technology very near term and plans to complete hardware build and plant commissioning in 2026.
