This year's Austin Tech Week did feel different from my previous two Austin Startup Weeks. I like the evolution as it fits the changing ATX scene. Great job Jacqueline Hughes, Joshua Baer & the entire team. My highlights: It was great to take the stage and hopefully impart a few thoughts from my cloudy crystal ball on the "Future of Storytelling" panel with Amy Jackson, Brent Wistrom, & Lyn Graft. Always wonderful to hear Brett A. Hurt's stories of how the Austin innovation scene was built and what it means for What's Next. Definitely the winner for most dynamic presentation with his use of Tom Cruise clips was Aasim Hasan! Charlie Plauche, Krishna Srinivasan, Morgan Flager, Kerry Rupp, & Thomas Ball gave their annual Texas Startup & VC Landscape session. The momentum is still going, even if not at the highs of the bubble. (Note: One nitpick - wish they'd included Q3 data since it's available) The fireside with Jason Calacanis was really fun. The love for his new home was gushing. It continues to be that those who move to Austin & Texas absolutely love it here because of the freedom & the future. Speaking of the future, I saw a whole bunch of Waymos driving around downtown. (It only took me 4 tries to get a decent pic) No tech week could be complete without mentioning AI at least once (or 10K times). The standout quote from "What Investors Look for In AI Startups" with Andrea Kalmans, Asanka Jayasuriya, David Evans, & Prerna Sharma was Asanka's insight on AI application startups: Real differentiation comes either from proprietary data or a team that really understands the industry and workflows. While I wasn't able to attend, I did hear from Sara R. Scharf, Ph.D. & Lana Ashby Rowder that the Snark Tank: Comedy Tech Roast was quite entertaining. Nice job Elizabeth Swaney OLY (Olympian) & Martín Martinez. And of course, the highlight that keeps me humble & lets me know right where I stand in the ecosystem was when I was told "We don't refer to you as Jason, we just call you Sara's husband" 🙃
