What Australian Governments can do to support the growth of co-operative housing. 1. Encourage investment in housing co-operatives as a form of institutional build-to-rent housing. 2. Re-instate a dedicated stream of funding for rental housing co-operatives. Dedicated funding for housing co-ops was available in the 1990s, when most existing Australian housing co-operatives were formed. 3. Allocate funds from the Social Housing Accelerator, the Housing Australia Future Fund and the expanded National Housing Infrastructure Facility to build the supply of co-op housing stock for registered community housing providers. 4. Co-operative Housing - the missing piece of Australia's housing puzzle Australia needs more housing co-operatives. Up to 30 per cent of Australians now rent long-term, primarily in the profit-driven private rental market. New models of renting are needed to provide stable, long-term tenancies. Rental Housing Co-operatives (co-ops) provide a distinct alternative in Australia's affordable housing sector. In Australia and overseas, co-ops have been effective financial managers of housing for decades. Co-ops offer build-to-rent housing that delivers long-term, stable and affordable housing for people on low-moderate incomes, including people who receive government income support, key workers, people working part-time, students and independent retirees. An incredible day of learning at the ACHA 2024 Co-operative Housing Summit! 🌟   A huge thank you to everyone who made this event possible! From our platinum sponsor, KeyInvest, to the dedicated attendees — your support and participation created an unforgettable experience.   A special shout-out to Stephanie Miller of Common Equity Housing SA Ltd and her team for hosting.   Our keynote speakers truly set the stage for a day full of insights: Tim Ross of CHF shared valuable lessons on the power of co-operative housing to build resilient communities in Canada. Sidsel Grimstad and Melina Morrison launched the European Study Report and shared valuable lessons learned by the tour participants earlier this year. Professor Wendy Stone  talked about the learnings she and her colleagues gained during the three-year project study on Australian Housing Co-operatives. . The workshops were full of practical takeaways for co-operative housing communities. Thank you to the presenters, Peter Sibly, Nasteha Mohamud, Molly Kendall, and Amy Lees.    At the conclusion of the day Liz Thomas delivered the closing remarks and launched the Australian Co-operative Housing Alliance policy blue print, which calls for a dedicated community housing funding stream to grow co-op housing to 10% of Australia’s social housing stock.   Key takeaways from the day: Co-operatives can lead change: Together, Australia's co-operatives have the power to address housing inequality. Advocacy at all levels of government is essential. Collaboration is key: Fostering partnerships is essential for growth, including between co-ops, members, government and the wider community. Unlocking the “Missing Middle”: Lessons from the European co-operative housing sector __ In April 2024, a delegation embarked on an eye-opening study tour of co-operative housing models in Copenhagen, Vienna and Zurich. Their goal was to uncover innovative solutions to Australia’s housing affordability crisis and explore the potential of the “missing middle” – the co-operative housing sector. At the ACHA Co-operative Housing Summit on 17 October, Melina Morrison, CEO of BCCM, and Dr. Sidsel Grimstad, Senior Lecturer and Teaching & Learning Lead at Griffith Centre for Systems Innovation, will present their findings in the workshop "The European Experience: Report on BCCM's 2024 European Co-operative Housing Study Tour."
