February is National Heart Month, to bring awareness of heart health and the potential of cardiovascular disease in America. In a 2022 study done by the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, 3.4 per 100,000 rural residents died of cardiovascular related issues. This alarming number is due to lack of transportation, location, and time to recognize and act on a cardiac event.   At Avel, Time Is Muscle. We had a wonderful time at the Arrowhead EMS conference! During the conference, we had a chance to sit down with Dean Tolar and our colleagues at Arrowhead EMS Association, Southwest EMS, Avel eCare, and Minnesota TZD to discuss our two recently awarded grants from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to implement and evaluate the use of tele-EMS in the backs of ambulances.

Telemedicine gives me peace of mind," Abigail Cyboron, MBA, CHFP, CEO of Chase County Community Hospital, noted. "Before telemedicine, I spent many hours worrying about physician backup coverage for our ED along with burning out the only physician we had. It was overwhelming. Now, I know it is handled," she concluded. "There is someone available, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to support our medical staff in whatever capacity they need. Out of all of the responsibilities with my role, this is one of the most important."
