"Studies show that students who miss 10% or more of the school year struggle with: learning gaps, lower test scores, increased dropout rates, and mental health concerns." One of the growing crises in education is a decrease in student performance due to chronic absenteeism. The number one cause of student absenteeism? Health-related absences. For example, studies show students with chronic conditions such as asthma or diabetes can cause a student to miss one-third of the school year. This, in turn, creates more challenges for schools who may not have the resources to combat every day medical needs. With access to our virtual licensed nurses, schools can receive medical care without needing to leave school for minor medical needs. This solution can help stabilize chronic condition flair ups, and in turn support student mental health and alleviate parental concerns. February is National Heart Month, to bring awareness of heart health and the potential of cardiovascular disease in America. In a 2022 study done by the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, 3.4 per 100,000 rural residents died of cardiovascular related issues. This alarming number is due to lack of transportation, location, and time to recognize and act on a cardiac event. At Avel, Time Is Muscle. Whether you live in an urban or rural area, the time it takes to assess, act, and treat patients in an emergency situation is known as 'The Golden Hour'. This crucial 60-minute window is important in treating emergencies such as a heart attack. With the help of telemedicine, our goal is to help responding EMS and Emergency rooms treat patients sooner, to help save a life. We'd like to thank all of our partners in EMS and Emergency rooms across the country for letting us be a part of the solution to life-saving medicine, in all communities. "I witnessed on a daily basis how telemedicine positively impacted and affected rural health care,” says Sheila Rigo, Nurse Practitioner at FREEMAN REGIONAL HEALTH SERVICES. “Now, as a new nurse practitioner working in a critical access hospital in rural South Dakota, I personally experience the benefits and can’t imagine practicing medicine without this awesome service.” Rural health care continues to face the challenge of limited resources in everyday emergencies. By utilizing telemedicine, rural hospitals have access to other medical experts, resulting in teamwork to help give the patient the best care possible. Our partners at Freeman Regional Health Services are a great example of pushing past the limits of rural health care, and putting their patients first. "With the right tools, dedicated professionals, and a strong connection to broader medical networks, rural healthcare can deliver exceptional medical care. Freeman Regional Health Services is proof of that." Together, we partner to share the mission of delivering high-quality care and supporting the Freeman community. Telemedicine gives me peace of mind," Abigail Cyboron, MBA, CHFP, CEO of Chase County Community Hospital, noted. "Before telemedicine, I spent many hours worrying about physician backup coverage for our ED along with burning out the only physician we had. It was overwhelming. Now, I know it is handled," she concluded. "There is someone available, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to support our medical staff in whatever capacity they need. Out of all of the responsibilities with my role, this is one of the most important." Partners like Chase County Community Hospital & Clinics inspire the Avel mission of providing healthcare to every community no matter their location through telemedicine. We are grateful to support their team in Pharmacy, Emergency, and Behavioral Health services, and help address daily healthcare challenges the industry is facing. We look forward to continuing our partnership and finding new innovative ways to support other communities and health systems throughout the nation.
