Researchers estimate that one-third of women globally experience one or more pelvic floor disorders, which include urinary incontinence, fecal incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse. We aim to help. Today, we announced that we began enrolling women in Nigeria in a #UI treatment study because women worldwide deserve to live leak-free. We’re very grateful to all who have made this happen. Globally, pelvic floor disorders affect as many as 50% of women in their lifetime. Urinary incontinence is the most common. In March 2024, we released the findings of our global incontinence study, which was among our most popular posts of the year. Two members of our clinical team, Jessica McKinney, PT, DScPT, MS and Laura Keyser, DPT, MPH, led the study, which found that women and clinicians in Nigeria and Kenya have a strong desire for education and treatment. Our Vice President of Clinical Affairs and Global Health Jessica McKinney, PT, DScPT, MS recently published a paper that describes the need to prioritize "scalable, population-level interventions" that can deliver the benefits of physical therapy to all to help mitigate persistent health disparities. Women deserve treatments (and apps!) that are validated by science, cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, used successfully by women in "the real world,” and have continuous professional medical involvement. The Leva Pelvic Health System has all of this. A recent study found that most apps for pelvic floor disorders are incomplete and lack medical professional involvement during development. The risks to women's health continue to increase. A 2024 March of Dimes report shows that over 35% of U.S. counties are considered maternity care deserts. This means they have no birthing facilities or obstetric clinicians. Women must be informed advocates for their health, which can leave vulnerable populations at greater risk.
