In recognition of the 2025 Black History Month’s theme, “African Americans Labor,” we highlight Beverly Greene. Dr. Greene is known as the "Pioneer of Intersectional Psychology" and has taught many students about cultural diversity and mental health. She earned her master’s and doctorate degrees at Adelphi University and then worked as a staff psychologist at Kings County Municipal Hospital in Brooklyn in the Inpatient Child Psychiatry Division. While there, she was asked to teach her mostly white colleagues about the important details to consider when working with their mostly Black patients. This led her to write about her experiences, which helped her start a teaching career at St. John's University. She still teaches about cultural diversity and its connection to mental health at St. John's today. In recognition of the 2025 Black History Month’s theme, “African Americans Labor,” we highlight Joseph L. White. Dr. White spent most of his career at the University of California at Irvine as a professor, but he also made important contributions as a dean, clinician, and consultant. His article "Towards a Black Psychology," published in 1970 by Ebony Magazine, started a movement to encourage better understanding of psychological approaches for the Black experience. He also helped inspire the next generation of leaders by supporting the education of many students of color. He founded the Educational Opportunity Program, which has helped thousands of first-generation, low-income students in California.
