Meet Bek Ventures! 🚀 The best-performing VC fund globally has a new name. Introducing the quietly thought-provoking venture firm. After months of development, we’re excited to finally launch our new name, independent brand and latest fund. This will build on the legacy we have established during our decade as Digital East Fund (ex-Earlybird Venture Capital) supporting the most innovative founders in Europe’s most dynamic markets. We have been driven by the belief that discipline is the key to success in VC. As Bek Ventures, our team remains completely committed to building a focused portfolio of exceptional founders, and our new fund allows us to do just that. This means we can give our brilliant founders the most important resources we can: our time, care and attention. Our new brand is about reinforcing our commitment to our principles. About us
Bek is a global venture capital firm accompanying a select group of early-stage founders from their earliest days to global scale with relentless, hands-on support. Insiders who adopt an outside perspective, we help exceptional teams succeed. Currently in our second decade, we have backed multi-billion-dollar successes, and the firm has been recognized as the top-performing VC globally since 2010 by HEC / Dow Jones. Our conviction is that early-stage investors can only deliver through focus — which is why we have stayed uncompromisingly disciplined and selective in the nature and number of founders we back, the size of funds we raise, and the caliber of investors we hire. Bek has offices in London, New York, Luxembourg and Istanbul.

We are excited to continue to support Grand Games in their $30m Series A after leading their pre-seed round less than a year ago. Despite our team’s deep experience in gaming with Peak Games (now Zynga), we have maintained a selective approach to investing in the industry. The Grand team convinced us they had the exceptional talent and bold vision to build an enduring company. They have proven their ability to execute beyond a doubt, recruiting a world-class team and launching two successful titles in just under 10 months. Congratulations to Bekir Batuhan Çelebi, Mehmet Çalım, Mustafa Fırtına, and the whole team! It’s also a pleasure to work alongside Balderton Capital on this round. We are excited to announce our decision to back VitVio in their $2 million pre-seed round. VitVio brings computer vision and artificial intelligence to operating rooms to improve surgical efficiency, patient outcomes, and hospitals’ ROI. We were immediately attracted to their technical capability proven out in an adjacent area and the giant impact that VitVio’s technology can have on the economics of hospitals, as well as improved health outcomes. The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (ROH), one of the best hospitals in the world, has also started a pilot program with VitVio. Congratulations to Thomas Knox, Maks Kozarzewski, Aleks Pajewski, Peter Rennert, PhD and the whole team who are proving the vast advantages that applied AI can bring to healthcare. What is the one hiring secret that all outlier companies share? They know how to hire for potential — not just experience. Time-stretched founders often gravitate towards candidates with impressive CVs, thinking that experience will solve their immediate problems. However, hiring for adaptability and future capacity — what we call potential — is often more valuable to early-stage businesses in the long term. Why? -Early-stage companies are constantly evolving. Employees need to be able to grow with the business. -High-potential employees thrive in fluid, fast-changing environments, creating a positive feedback loop that helps increase retention. Identifying and nurturing potential is an important skill for founders and founding teams to cultivate, but not always easy. Read more about how we suggest founders find high-potential individuals and create a place for them to thrive, ultimately building more successful businesses. Link in the comments 👇

2024 was a milestone year for Bek Ventures and our portfolio. We launched a new, $250m fund and revealed a new name and new identity, leveraging the same team and same strategy we have championed for over a decade. The portfolio also marked many important milestones: ❇️ We were proud to exit another fund returner obilet in a transaction led by global mobility giant BlaBlaCar. ❇️ We welcomed 5 exceptional companies to the portfolio: Zeta Labs, Grand Games, Proofs, and two exciting, unannounced companies, both harnessing AI to solve real-world problems. ❇️ We saw our existing portfolio go from strength to strength, raising significant rounds from global investors. Congratulations to Midas, DraftWise, Upstash, Picus Security, and Simr (formerly UberCloud). And a thank you to our coinvestors, including Index Ventures, Spark Capital, Andreessen Horowitz, Portage and Riverwood Capital. These results are a testament to the efforts of our outstanding founders, who continue to impress us daily with their ambition and tenacity. Read our 2024 in review at the link in the comments.

🚨 After studying Chinese and computer science, Mehmet Selcuk Atici became an investor and today he's managing partner at Bek Ventures. He talks to Sam Shead for VC Wednesdays, a weekly series featuring a Q&A interview with a venture capitalist. 🖊️ Any top tips for those who want to try and break into the industry? When looking for opportunities to break into the industry, look where exceptional people from your networks have worked. Spend time on LinkedIn and look at the career paths of successful founders or early employees. Which investors did they work with? Do your diligence on firms and individual investors. When you are evaluating firms, look at whether they have been good at providing career paths to individuals. How have they handled promoting talent in the past? When evaluating individuals, don’t be too dazzled by prestigious partners or their pedigrees. Instead, try and understand how closely they are actually working with top founders. Consider working at a VC-backed tech company so you get a perspective on what it’s like to work with investors from the point of view of a portfolio company. 🖊️ What’s been the best day of your career so far and why? Eight years ago, a young person interviewed at Bek who showed strong entrepreneurial instincts, and I recommended that instead of joining us, he get product experience. Recently I found myself at the same table with the same individual. This time, however, he was pitching me his company and told me my advice from that interview long ago had influenced his career decision. We ultimately ended up leading the company’s pre-seed round, and the startup has now gone on to raise a $30m (€29m) round within a year after our investment. 🖊️ How do you go about finding the most talented founders to back? In my 12 years in VC, I’ve discovered that the best founders want to also work with the best businesspeople, so that’s what we’re aspiring to be at Bek. That means we want to be people with a multidimensional understanding of how businesses work. We also look for founders with similar qualities to our team members, which include strong ethics and a relentless sense of responsibility. Finally, every multibillion-dollar-outcome founder I have worked with has always been obsessed with people and talent. That’s why we look for founders who are excellent talent attractors and talent retainers. #VCWednesdays #vc #venturecapital #startups #TechonLinkedIn

From hiring to operations, founders navigate hundreds of decisions daily. The key isn't just making choices — it's having frameworks that make those choices clearer. Our new website intends to be a home for us to share decision-making frameworks that have served us as we support founders. We want these pieces to spark discussion, even disagreement, and maybe, a clear way forward on some of the most important decisions that founders face. Because building a business of consequence requires embracing counterarguments and unpopular opinions. A huge thank you to all of the people who have contributed to our first publications and lent your thoughts and experiences: Hristo Borisov, Egem Eraslan, Emre Tinaztepe, Robin Trickett, Brandon Deer and our team Oguzhan Ozer Baturay Kaya Arda Kirkagac Eren Ulu. Disagree, agree, and discuss - we would love to hear from you. Link in the comments.

Our Managing Partner Cem Sertoglu recently sat down with Harry Stebbings of 20VC to talk about all things early-stage investing. He couldn’t have described our approach at Bek better: “What we sell is not cash…What we sell is our time, attention, and capacity—one of the 20 slots in our fund’s portfolio that we’ll dedicate our resources to for the next 10 years. Founders are buying care, not just capital.” We’re committed to backing radical ideas and partnering with a small selection of the most exceptional founders, giving them the time and attention they deserve.
