🌍 The Berlin Urban Nature Pact is gaining momentum! 🌿 We are thrilled that with the ceremonial signing of the #BerlinUrbanNaturePact by Mayor Alejandro Eder, #Cali, the host city of #COP16, is now officially part of our alliance—a strong signal for the protection of urban biodiversity! We also warmly welcome #Utrecht, represented in Cali by Anouk Teuns (pictured) and Albin Hunia, as a new partner. Berlin, represented by Permanent Secretary Britta Behrendt, and Cali have formed a strategic partnership as part of the pact to exchange knowledge and tackle common challenges. This collaboration highlights Berlin's role as a pioneer in the global network of cities promoting sustainable urban development. In productive discussions with representatives from cities like #SanFrancisco and #Boulder, as well as organizations such as theWorld Green Infrastructure Network (WGIN) and the European Committee of the Regions, we have defined the next steps for implementing the Berlin Urban Nature Pact. At the same time, we are proud that Berlin is now part of the #CitieswithNature network. The Berlin Urban Nature Pact attracted great interest at COP16 and marks a significant milestone on the path toward greener, more livable cities for future generations. Gipfel für lokale und subnationale Regierungen im Rahmen der #COP16 stellte Staatssekretärin Britta Behrendt im kolumbianischen Cali den Berlin Urban Nature Pact als globale Initiative für den Schutz und die Förderung der Biodiversität in urbanen Räumen vor. Der Pakt bietet Städten weltweit einen strategischen Rahmen, um globale Biodiversitätsziele lokal zu verankern und dabei ihre individuellen Bedürfnisse zu berücksichtigen. An honor to participate in the #COP16 Blue Zone and the 8th Cities Summit organized by ICLEI, a pivotal event driving urban transformation. Learning from Berlin's experience, led by Sandra Naumann, was truly enriching—a global benchmark in urban innovation and sustainability. I also had the opportunity to join the panel on the manifesto to prioritize small and medium-sized cities. Hearing Josep Canals-Molina’s insights and the commitment of various actors to prioritize these cities was inspiring. Small and medium-sized cities are indeed essential to building a sustainable and resilient future. 🎉The #BerlinUrbanNaturePact is now live! ⭐Two years, several rounds of consultations with more than 90 #cities worldwide, followed by the creation of the framework itself - all leading to the launch of the Pact at the 8th Summit for Local and Subnational Governments during #COP16! As a collaborative initiative for and by cities to help them implement #global #biodiversity goals locally in a way that accomodates their unique needs, this was a fitting forum for the Pact to launch to the cities present in the room, and around the world. As the Permanent Secretary for Climate Protection and the Environment of Berlin, Britta Behrendt, said: "We as cities will be the ones to roll up our sleeves and be the leaders of the transformation. The Berlin Urban Nature Pact empowers cities to lead the movement for biodiversity action."
