🐟 📣 We focus today on a western Atlantic fish species that is found from Bermuda and North Carolina and along the eastern coast of the United States into the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean down to #Venezuela. We’re referring to the RED HIND, also known as the koon or 'lucky grouper' in Caribbean vernacular. 🐠Even though it's the most common species of grouper in the Caribbean, recent studies show an overall decline in the populations of this not-so-lucky grouper. Given its commercial importance for local economies, there has been an increase in fishing regulations to recover the red hind around Bermuda, the US Caribbean and Mexico and a complete ban within US waters. 💪🏽📈By protecting the spawning fish, we can recover the lucky grouper! So please, refrain from fishing, selling, buying or consumir red hind during its reproductive time. 👀👆🏽Check out today’s post to see (and hear) a coquette couple in courtship and learn more about this species. #redhind #speciesrecover #recoverbigfish #respectthemamas #protectyourcatch ___________________ 🐟 📣 Hoy nos centramos en una especie de pez del Atlántico occidental que es fácil encontrar desde las Bermudas y Carolina del Norte hasta #Venezuela a lo largo de la costa oriental de Estados Unidos hasta el Golfo de México y el Caribe. 🇨🇺 🎉 🐟A 5-year ban has been approved for the Nassau Grouper, Epinephelus striatus, a species considered overfished and in a state of collapse in Cuba and in the entire Caribbean Sea. It is necessary to establish regulations aimed at its protection based on the principles set forth in the FAO Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries. The resolution was issued by the Cuban Ministry of Food Industry and it was published in the Official Gazette on December 15. It also provides that during the year prior to the expiration of the term of the temporary ban, studies of the population must be carried out to determine if the species shows recovery in order to proceed with its release. 🐠🔊We continue in a playful grouper-mood… Did you know that Nassau grouper have sophisticated communication skills? They communicate with stylized movements and shifting patterns on their skin, but they also use sounds to communicate! They transmit distinctive acoustic messages that correspond to specific behavioral displays during reproduction.  Our friend, Dr. Michelle Schärer-Umpierre speaks fish. She and her colleagues have identified 3 different Nassau Grouper calls, associated with 3 different behaviors: A. The Alarm call 🚨to defend their territory or food resources. This pulse train sound expresses distress. B. The Agonistic call 👊🏽 is used by males that are competing for females. It’s often accompanied by interaction of two males following a gravid female. C. 🌊🪸 The ocean is the planet’s principal climate regulator, and Climate Change (CC) is altering its physics and chemistry, thereby affecting the ecology and biology of marine life. These changes in turn impact ocean economics and the livelihoods of millions of people who depend on it. 🧪But many scientists consider that "the interaction between CC and the ocean and its dependent economies are bidirectional”: the ocean economic activities also contribute to carbon emission and, therefore climate change.
