Driving Science Education

About us

BioBus helps K-12 and college students in New York City discover, explore, and pursue science. We focus on students excluded from the scientific community due to factors such as race, gender, economic status, and physical access. Through this work, we envision a world where all people have the opportunity to reach their full scientific potential. We’ve reached 300,000 students at more than 800 schools since 2008, primarily in NYC public and charter schools and as far away as Boston, California, and even Egypt and Jordan. BioBus students connect with scientists from diverse backgrounds, learn lab and research skills, practice science communication, and take steps to become the next generation of scientists and problem-solvers, making the world better for all of us. Our students access and become part of the scientific community through introductory science labs aboard our mobile labs at their schools; after school, weekend, and summer programs; and year-long internships. We offer programs city-wide with a focus on Harlem, the South Bronx, and the Lower East Side.

This November 5th, Team BioBus will run the NYC Marathon in memory of Joel Oppenheim - an inspiring leader, mentor, friend, and runner. 🧡🏃🏻♂️💙 Joel was a valuable member of the BioBus Board of Directors and dedicated his life to championing equity in science. Joel's leadership at the Office of Science Research at NYU Grossman School of Medicine increased the participation of women and minorities in doctoral programs in the biomedical sciences. Joel also ran multiple marathons, including the TCS NYC Marathon. We are proud to dedicate Team BioBus to Joel's memory this year. Visit our marathon page to learn more about his legacy and make a donation in his honor. https://lnkd.in/eARYrCHX

This summer, BioBus teamed up with WE ACT for Environmental Justice to co-create a youth science program to educate and empower the next generation of environmental leaders ✊🏾👩🏽🔬💚! Youth at the Graham Windham Manhattanville Community Center conducted experiments in the neighborhood to explore the impact of air pollution 🌫️, extreme heat 🌡️, and green space quality 🌳 on their communities. They then used what they learned to envision and build a model for a more environmentally-just playground, and presented their work to WE ACT members. Their playground designs included water features for cooling, trees and plants for shade and improving air quality, and many elements to make the playground fun and accessible! WE ACT’s mission is to build healthy communities by ensuring that people of color and/or low income residents participate meaningfully in the creation of sound and fair environmental health and protection policies and practices. 📸 - Chris Dobens, WE ACT for Environmental Justice

Biomedical Engineering Masters Student at Binghamton University

This summer, I had the privilege of interning with BioBus, a NYC-based nonprofit focused on mentoring underrepresented youth in STEM and conducting community-based research. My project centered on investigating the impact of heavy metal pollution from Combined Sewage Overflow (CSO) systems on grass shrimp in the Hudson River. This experience challenged me to design and execute a research project with high school students, ensuring that our work aligned with both educational goals and environmental justice initiatives in West Harlem. Throughout this process, I developed key skills in project management, data analysis, and scientific communication, while also learning how to navigate the complexities of leading a diverse team. Mentoring students from varying backgrounds broadened my perspective and sharpened my ability to communicate complex concepts clearly and effectively. These experiences not only refined my problem-solving and analytical abilities but also strengthened my capacity to build relationships and communicate value. I am deeply grateful to my mentors at BioBus, especially Maia Yoshida and Candida Barreto, my co-mentor Lucia Flores, the LifeSci NYC Internship Program, and my fellow interns for their invaluable support and for providing me with such a transformative opportunity. I look forward to building on these experiences by integrating what I've learned into future opportunities that combine my passion for science, leadership, and creating broader community impact.
