About us
The Bishop Arts Theatre Center (BATC) is an award-winning, multicultural theatre company with IRS 501 (c)(3) tax-exempt status. BATC was chartered in September 1993 in Atlanta, Georgia and founded by Teresa Coleman Wash. At that time, the theatre was producing dinner theatre performances at the Lakewood Playhouse and partnering with community groups such as Luke’s Place, a neighborhood organization that provided social services for men & women recovering from substance abuse. The specific objectives and purposes of this corporation are to: - provide cultural and artistic opportunities to individuals who have been marginalized and children who live in at-risk communities, -use theater as a platform for social change and to raise awareness about issues that are important to our community, -provide instruction in theatre, acting, dance and other art forms, -sponsor special events involving public performances of plays, musicals, dances, and other art forms with various community performing art groups in order to broaden the cultural experience to a more diverse group, and -directly engage and to facilitate others to engage in the promotion of the arts, generally. Our mission is to cultivate a diverse and vibrant arts community committed to social impact while creating opportunities for local and emerging artists to develop new, contemporary, and lasting works that celebrate the diversity and resiliency of our community. Today, we offer a full season of in-person and virtual theater performances, jazz concerts, speaker series events, and year-round arts education programs.

We’re on the front lines affecting change in a major way!
The National Endowment for the Arts estimates that 2-3 theatres are closing their doors each month. I was so grateful to be in the room with these thought leaders from the planning committee of the Professional Nonprofit Theatre Coalition this past weekend in NY advocating for The American Theatre. Join us in championing the STAGES Act, introduced by Senator Peter Welch of Vermont! Shout out to all of our co-sponsors (we need more bipartisan support). This legislation is vital for advocating policies that support our vibrant arts community, many of whom provide critical services to our communities throughout the country. “We’re relying on nonprofit leaders, many of them people of color, many of them Black women, to literally save the world — and we treat them as if they are disposable. It is not a surprise that burnout is high,” I realize values have shifted since the summer of 2020, but the work continues and for those of us who have been on the front lines need time to recharge. Years ago, I was discouraged from asking for a sabbatical but instead to use the words “capacity building.” It took a minute to finally build our dream team staff and board, but with grit and determination, we’re finally here. Shout out to our partners at Wise Resource Development, Allyn Media, and Three Box Strategic Communications.
