We recently announced that recruitment for the next cohort of #BlackinCancer postdoc fellows is now open. This fellowship, aims to drive innovative cancer prevention, treatment, and cure strategies; address cancer outcome disparities in the Black community, and enhance Black representation in cancer research at tenure-track level. The Black in Cancer Postdoctoral Fellowship is offered in partnership with the Emerald Foundation, Inc. - a private biomedical research organization that funds research initiatives focused on oncology, neurodegenerative diseases, autoimmune disorders, heritable congenital conditions, and other poorly understood or treatment-resistant illnesses. We want to create a research community where everyone has the opportunity to excel. At the moment, this isn’t always the case – Black researchers are underrepresented in #STEM and as of last year, make up just 1% of our grant applications. To try and tackle this issue, we’re running our #BlackLeadersinCancer PhD scholarship again this year, in partnership with Black in Cancer and Windsor Fellowship. We’re thrilled to be able to extend this programme to all CRUK centres so that more students from Black heritage backgrounds will be provided a four-year fully funded PhD in #CancerResearch.   Successful applicants will have the chance to study at any CRUK centre from September 2025. They’ll also receive mentoring and wraparound support throughout their PhD.    Know someone who might be interested? I don't normally watch TV on a morning, but I stayed at my Mum's last night and she always has the news as she gets ready for the day. I'm glad to have caught this item on the breakfast show this morning. Post-doc and CEO of Black in Cancer, Sigourney Bonner, highlights the stark inequity we see in cancer diagnosis, experiences, and mortality. A study by Cancer Research UK (CRUK) and NHS Digital found Black women were more likely than white women to be diagnosed with late-stage cancer. Research by the Race Equality Foundation also found that Black patients reported more negative experiences of cancer care than white patients. This morning on BBC Breakfast, the important work of Black in Cancer was highlighted, featuring insights from Sigourney Bonner, Magda Ali and Randy Greaves at the Cancer Research UK Cambridge Institute. Our Director of Evidence and Implementation Naser Turabi then joined presenters Ben and Sally on the breakfast sofa to shed light on the complexities of cancer inequalities and the dedicated efforts we are making to address them. Together, we are working to tackle health inequalities and improve outcomes for those from minority backgrounds, as well as emphasise the need for better representation in research 💪 #BlackinCancer #CancerResearch #DiversityInResearch
