Welp, now hopefully y’all see why I move the way I move. Direct, to the point and right down to it. I always said the hardwork was heart work! You reallyyyyyyy have to care about this work, it realllllyyyyy has to matter to you because the tide always shifts and waves are always made. When folx first came to work with us I asked immediately did they have resources, did they have capacity, were they ready to dive in. I was often met with no budget, and folx only wanting to pick my brain. Like my brain was a synonym for cotton but I knew better. I challenged and fought back and raised enough funds to create a safe space outside of fickle priorities and masked allies and I’ve protected it with my life. But now, here we are when the rubber meets the road and we watch work undone and agencies who speant years “unlearning” send mass emails dismissing whole teams by the end of the day. Whew whew whewwwwww so disappointing, and my heart hurts for so many people impacted and disregarded. Even if they didn’t want to, it drives the point that systems simply won’t save us. Now is the time to support BIMS. We’ve spent this month strategic planning because I knew foolery was a comin. I got my rest, strapped on my crocs, took a deep ancestral breath and went into vision mode. Notice I didn’t say survival mode. I believe in the community we have built and the plans we have. We had already removed ourselves from fragile partnerships because honestly the writing has been on the wall for a while. I’m sure somethin will come from somewhere but for now we will continue to Build Innovation in Marine Science and change the face of who people see as scientists. Because at the end of the day our planet is literally on fire and we know which communities will feel it the worst. So naw, we still fighting and we will thrive. Not sure what to do right now? If you have done the heart work and are ready for the hardwork, hit the Givebutter link to help us reach our goal of becoming fully supported by unrestricted funds! We got this, and we got room for y’all ova here 🙌🏾🌊 #ForTheOcean #JoyfulLeader #MarineScienceForThaStreetz https://lnkd.in/em9wyYzC

The UCSC Center for Coastal Climate Resilience sponsored Black in Marine Science (BIMS) Week 2024 #BIMSWeek2024, in San Diego from December 1st - 8th and supported nine UCSC students to build community at Black In Marine Science, Non-Profit Organization. Ayanna Mays, a PhD student at the Ecology and Evolutionary Biology Department at UCSC, said, “ I had a phenomenal time at BIMS Week 2024. BIMS Week is unique in that it encourages attendees to think about their role in society as scientists. It renewed my excitement about my research and inspired me to further develop my science communication skills. I came away with a stronger sense of belonging in the marine science field." https://lnkd.in/g2TJcTfF #BIMSWeek2024 #MarineScienceisLit #BlackinMarineScience -

Thrilled to see a mention of Black In Marine Science, Non-Profit Organization (BIMS) in the recent Cityline segment, Breaking the Green Ceiling: Women at the Waterfront, with Letise LaFeir, PhD,! 🌊 BIMS is doing incredible work to celebrate Black marine scientists, spread environmental awareness, and inspire the next generation of leaders in marine conservation. As a board member, I am proud to contribute to this mission and support its continued impact. I’m also deeply grateful for my time at the New England Aquarium, where I had the privilege of working with an exceptional team dedicated to advancing equity and inclusion in marine conservation. NEAq continues to lead the way in amplifying underrepresented voices and fostering meaningful connections with a wide array of communities. While I embark on a new journey, I will always cherish my time there and stay connected to this inspiring institution. As we approach Martin Luther King Jr. Day, we’re inspired by Dr. King’s vision of justice and equality, and we’re celebrating those who continue to work toward creating a more equitable world. In today's episode of WCVB’s CityLine, Karen Holmes Ward talks with the Aquarium's Chief of Conservation and Stewardship Dr. Letise LaFeir, PhD, about the critical work being done to promote climate justice and expand opportunities in STEM. The segment showcases the power of community, representation, and resilience. Letise shares her professional journey, and discusses how the New England Aquarium is creating opportunities through efforts like our community-focused outdoor exhibits, February’s Lowell Lecture with Black Girls Dive, and supporting communities affected by climate change. Together, we honor Dr. King’s legacy by striving for inclusivity, empowerment, and sustainable futures for all. Watch the segment: https://bit.ly/4hm2Ha7 #ClimateJustice #MinoritiesInStem #MLKJrDay

The Paris Climate Agreement unites nearly 196 countries to combat climate change. 🌍 The U.S. joined in 2016, withdrew in 2020, rejoined in 2021, and now plans to withdraw again in 2025. Despite this, states and businesses are staying committed. Let's keep pushing for climate action! 🌱✨ #ParisAgreement #ClimateAction #BlackinMarineScience

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is widely known for his dedication to civil rights and equality, but his message also extends deeply into the principles of environmental justice. At its core, his fight for social justice aligns with the fight for a healthier planet and equitable access to natural resources. Dr. King once said, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” This sentiment resonates profoundly in the realm of environmental justice, where marginalized communities often bear the brunt of pollution, climate change, and environmental degradation. These injustices highlight the need for fair treatment and meaningful involvement of all people, regardless of race or socioeconomic status, in the development and enforcement of environmental policies. To honor Dr. King’s legacy, we must continue striving for a world where environmental and social justice go hand in hand. Protecting our planet is not just an environmental issue—it’s a human rights issue. By addressing the systemic inequalities that fuel environmental harm, we can build a future where both people and the planet thrive together. #BlackinMarineScience
