ETHNOGRAPHY. AI. AFRICA. Our just-published EPIC 2024 paper proposes something both timeless and radical: to understand how technology shapes our world, start by being present with the people who use it. We explore how ethnography bridges two complex worlds: Africa, a continent with thousands of languages shaping daily life and technological practice, and AI language models that increasingly fill our feeds, shape our searches, and color our digital days. Here's how we frame it in the paper: "Ethnography's embodied engagement uniquely connects LLM technology with the complex social contexts it is built from and deployed into." Simple words. Complex realities. To understand where we are—and why—we looked back at the historical roots of today's digital divides. At colonization's echoes in AI "magic." At Africa's technological innovations across millennia, continuing vibrantly today. These histories are not abstract; they shape how AI lands in different contexts and what it enables—or disrupts. As we argue, "Technology's integration into African life, life anywhere on the planet, is contingent and contextual. So too is it open-ended, with multiple uses and outcomes that depend on agency." When languages carrying millennia of knowledge and culture meet Western-centric machine learning models, who adapts to whom? We seek the answers not in abstractions but in presence. In understanding how communities navigate these tools, what choices they make, and why. Most crucially: "This means researching with African communities, researchers, and scholars, not just talking to them." To help us move beyond binaries like techno-optimism and digital doom, we built a research framework that draws from our individual and collective learnings, diverse research backgrounds, and the lived experiences of African communities we've worked with or belong to. The idea is to prevent oversimplification and promote awareness while providing the know-how to do research that engages deeply with complexity and context. Our study is a small contribution, but made with a lot of love to help us all better understand how language technologies land in diverse contexts. Because as we learned: "By centering Africa, a continent whose languages and knowledge have long been marginalized, we advance a collaborative vision and contribute to the crucial work of decolonizing LLMs." Find our full paper "Decolonizing LLMs: An Ethnographic Framework for AI in African Contexts" at https://lnkd.in/e_zvqkdw. • We're so proud of this paper and honored to have had the opportunity to be a part of such impactful research. As generative AI tools like LLMs spread globally, ethnographers and tech folks need a critical lens through which to view the assumptions that are built into English-centric LLMs and solid tools to do research that will help us find an ethical and productive path forward that benefits everyone, not just English speakers.   Thank you to Lindsey DeWitt Prat, PhD, Chris Golias, Ph.D., Nercy Olivia Lucas, and Mia Lewis for this incredible work!
