Two of my pet peeves when I was working as a project engineer in engineering consulting: 1. Project Postmortems Many of our projects seemed to be over on hours (let me know if this sounds familiar), but no one could tell me (a) what to do to improve the situation or (b) what specifically was causing the overages. Part of this is learning the business (which takes time), but having some more actionable information early on would have been helpful. 2. Knowledge Transfer Go ask five different engineers in your firm how to complete a task, and you might just receive five different answers (again, let me know if this sounds familiar). Processes were often documented, but rarely could the information be found when needed. So - I would learn how to do task X from one engineer, but needed to modify it when working under another. Some variance is to be expected from engineer to engineer (we are human after all), but this really showed when one engineer's way of doing something was significantly different than another's. I'm including a link to a quiz from BQE Software that reminded me of some of the above. If you take the quiz, it will offer some suggestions to these types of problems based on your responses. Just remember: before adopting any solution or software, understand the problem(s) you are trying to solve, and what you are trying to accomplish...otherwise you have a solution in search of a problem. And that never ends well.
