What is the EU Taxonomy? 🤔 As the European Union targets net zero by 2050, the Taxonomy helps businesses, investors, and policymakers align their efforts with sustainability goals. 📊 So, what does it really mean for your organization? 💡 The Taxonomy is a classification system that defines which economic activities are genuinely sustainable, reducing the risk of greenwashing. It outlines six environmental objectives, including climate change mitigation & adaptation, sustainable use of water resources, pollution prevention, biodiversity protection, and circular economy transition. 🔍 For investors and financial institutions, this means clear guidance on where to direct funds—helping them contribute to the green transition while avoiding misleading claims. 🌱 By creating transparency and promoting accountability, the Taxonomy enables businesses to better assess their sustainability efforts and adjust their strategies accordingly. The European Commission has approved a €500 million French scheme designed to support chemical recycling of plastic waste. 🌍 This initiative will contribute significantly to the European Union’s goal of fostering a circular and resilient economy. France’s plan focuses on investing in the chemical recycling of specific types of plastic waste, including trays, films, non-beverage bottles, and textiles with polyester content. This technology aims to convert mixed or contaminated plastics back into raw materials, effectively reducing waste and promoting climate neutrality across industries. The program will provide grants of up to 40% of eligible investment costs, encouraging companies of all sizes to adopt chemical recycling technologies. This approval marks a significant moment in the shift toward sustainability, paving the way for similar initiatives across Europe.

We’ve only gotten through January and a lot has already happened this year! The first month of 2025 is almost over, so here is a quick recap of five important things that happened in sustainability this month: 1️⃣ Devastating wildfires in Southern California caused at least 28 deaths and destroyed over 16,000 structures. 2️⃣ Major sustainability reporting requirements went into effect globally. The European Union launched its Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive, or CSRD, and Australia introduced mandatory climate reporting this month. 3️⃣ Thailand implemented a ban on plastic waste imports, showing their willingness to tackle plastic pollution. 4️⃣ In a controversial decision, the United States withdrew from the Paris Agreement for the second time under the Trump administration. However, Mike Bloomberg’s philanthropy stepped up to help cover the funding gap left by the U.S.’s withdrawal. 5️⃣ The World Economic Forum held its annual summit in Davos, where global leaders discussed pressing environmental and economic challenges. The theme of this year was “Collaboration for the Intelligent Age,” so much of the conversation was centered around Al. Yesterday, the same person who called the climate crisis "one of the great scams" became the president of the United States (again). It can be easy to become discouraged or distracted in the face of these challenges. But now is not the time to lose hope. The fight for sustainability (and against climate change) is urgent, and we cannot afford to be sidetracked. While the U.S. federal government may take a step backward, progress is still being made around the world — and, in many cases, it is accelerating as many organizations, leaders, and individuals continue to show their commitment to continuing to make climate progress. California, which has recently experienced devastating fires driven in part by climate change, is taking action with sustainability reporting requirements for large companies Wind and solar are now the cheapest sources of energy globally, and thanks to the Inflation Reduction Act, thousands of American jobs have been created in these sectors— including many in Republican-led states. The Biden administration recently used a decades-old law to protect over 625 million acres of U.S. ocean from oil drilling and gave $22.92 billion in conditional loans to eight U.S. utility companies seeking to modernize energy infrastructure, expand clean energy projects, and enhance grid reliability. Meanwhile, the global momentum toward climate action is undeniable. Sustainability reporting requirements around the world are beginning to go into effect. 194 signatories to the Paris Agreement will update their climate strategies this year, and early reports indicate those strategies will be ambitious and robust. Climate and sustainability are consistently ranked as the top long-term concerns in the World Economic Forum's Global Risk Report, with majorities in every country surveyed expressing support for climate action. The path ahead is not without challenges, but it is one we must walk with resolve. We cannot afford to lose focus, or time. For those in the U.S., voting in local and state elections remains a powerful tool for meaningful action, many climate policies can and are being implemented on a local level. Economic and corporate change can also be a powerful lever when enacted thoughtfully and at scale. Let’s remain committed to progress. The fight against climate change is far from over, and every step forward matters.
