🧠 🧩 Meet Dr. Marta Casquero Veiga. In elementary school, she became enamored with the challenge of understanding the physical world's unsolved puzzles. Now she aims to piece together the biggest puzzle of all—the brain. With funding from BrightFocus Foundation’s Alzheimer’s Disease Research program, she’s developing cutting-edge technology to detect tiny blood clots in the brain, potentially slowing Alzheimer’s progression. We are working to save mind and sight. BrightFocus is at the forefront of brain and eye health, advancing early-stage, investigator-initiated research around the world. We also provide free educational materials to people affected by or interested in these diseases, empowering them to take action for themselves and others. They can take advantage of news and research results offered through BrightFocus websites, publications, social media, videos, podcasts, and TV and radio public service announcements. Through our toll-free phone number, 1-800-437-2423, people can speak directly with a member of our information services staff, Monday through Friday from 9am to 5pm Eastern time, for support, answers to questions, and referrals. A nonprofit organization under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code of the United States, we were founded in 1973 and known until February 1, 2013 as the American Health Assistance Foundation. 👏 Congratulations to Dr. Diane Bovenkamp and Preeti Subramanian and the entire team of co-authors! These recommendations will guide future grant applicants and elevate the excellence of glaucoma research funded by BrightFocus Foundation.
I’m particularly proud of this consensus publication on which my BrightFocus Foundation colleague, Dr. Preeti Subramanian, Director of Vision Science Programs, and I are co-authors. This group of experts have outlined for the entire community the preferred methods and pitfalls of techniques for ex vivo studies of outflow facility and intraocular pressure in glaucoma. We will be referencing this paper in our applicant instructions for our next grant cycle (FY26), which will open in July 2025. Please take a look at this paper to familiarize yourself with the recommendations. Kudos to out to all co-authors for this collective, collegial work, including: National Glaucoma Research Scientific Review Committee members, Drs. Dan Stamer, C. Ross Ethier, Paloma Liton, PhD, FARVO, Colleen McDowell, Kate Keller, PhD, Gillian McLellan, Abbot F. Clark, Michael P. Fautsch; and many, many past and present grantees. Special, heartfelt thank you to partner Western Glaucoma Foundation, Dr. John R. Samples M.D. and the late Griffen Samples (we miss her).
