Reforming public support to agriculture would boost innovation and help the sector meet productivity and sustainability goals.   Today OECD - OCDE Secretary-General Mathias Cormann launched the 🆕 Agricultural Policy Monitoring & Evaluation 2024 report. Here’s everything you need to know:   1️⃣ International agricultural markets continue to be affected by war, conflict, extreme weather events, and export restrictions. Amidst these challenges, agricultural policies boosted the sector’s capacity to respond, helping to ensure that food systems are fit for purpose as future conditions evolve.   2️⃣ Support to agriculture remains high but has declined since its peak in 2021. Across the 54 countries covered in the report, government support now stands at USD 842 billion per year from 2021 to 2023. This decline comes mostly from higher world market prices, not policy reforms.   3️⃣ Significant reforms in the agriculture sector are needed to achieve both productivity and sustainability goals. Reorientation of support towards general services, including well-targeted investments in innovation, will need to be made to boost robust and sustainable productivity growth and reduce environmental impact. 🔗https://oe.cd/AgME2024

New Open Access article from BrightSpace in Q Open – Exploring Agricultural Decisions and Their Impact on the Safe and Just Operating Space A new systematic literature review highlights how agricultural production decisions influence the Safe and Just Operating Space (SJOS), offering critical insights for policy modeling and sustainable agriculture. The study examines three key categories of production decisions: - On-farm technology usage: Impacts SJOS through yield-related technological choices. - Farm structural change: Affects economies of scale and scope. - Field structural change: Influences management efficiency and environmental outcomes. While significant knowledge exists, the review identifies research gaps that need addressing to improve policy modelling and guide future decision-making for sustainable agricultural practices. This research is a valuable resource for policymakers and stakeholders aiming to enhance SJOS outcomes through informed agricultural strategies. BrightSpace Represented at FFA 2024 Markets Outlook Workshop On November 19, 2024, BrightSpace was represented at the Forum for the Future of Agriculture ’s in-person workshop titled "2024 Markets Outlook – What the Numbers Say," held in Brussels, Belgium. The event featured contributions from presenter Petr Havlik (IIASA), and Hans Van Meijl (Wageningen Economic Research), both actively engaged in the BrightSpace Horizon Europe Project. The workshop explored pressing topics on global agricultural #markets and #sustainability challenges. The first session, “Setting the Scene,” included insightful presentations by BrightSpace Scientific and Policy Advisory Group member Tassos Haniotis (FFA Adviser on Sustainable Productivity), Petr Havlik (IIASA), and John Baffes (World Bank). Key topics addressed in the presentations: “The blissful linearity of market outlook and the nonlinear nature of their uncertain prospects” – Tassos Haniotis “Food inflation: Is this time different?” – John Baffes “Can we have the fuel and eat it? Land use pressures and sustainability questions” – Petr Havlik The second session expanded on the implications of these insights, discussing their policy relevance in a high-level panel moderated by Angelo Di Mambro (Euractiv). Speakers included policymakers, researchers, and industry leaders from OECD, FAO, IFPRI, and the European Commission. The event concluded with remarks from Jurgen Tack, Secretary General of the European Landowners' Organization. The BrightSpace team's active participation highlights their role in shaping critical discussions on agriculture, markets, and sustainability. This gathering brings together experts, policymakers, and stakeholders to discuss the project’s progress in promoting sustainable agriculture within the framework of the Safe and Just Operating Space (SJOS).
