Progressive, inclusive, diverse, engaged Reform community in Brooklyn Heights.

About us

Brooklyn Heights Synagogue (BHS) is an inclusive lay-led community dedicated to caring for the world and each other. As a progressive congregation affiliated with the Union for Reform Judaism, we value the diverse ways our members express their Jewish identities as we maintain an abiding respect for the traditions of the Jewish people. Founded in 1959 by a small group of Brooklyn Heights neighbors, BHS is today a congregation of nearly 500 member units living in Brownstone Brooklyn and DUMBO, Lower Manhattan, throughout New York City and the Tri-State area. We welcome the participation of members of all ages and backgrounds, and work together to shape and strengthen our community. BHS is proud to offer a full calendar of worship services, education programs including a K-12 Religious School and adult and intergenerational learning opportunities, social gatherings, and Tikkun Olam initiatives. Our highly-regarded Preschool and parenting center serve our members and the wider community. As a founding member of the New York City Emergency Shelter Network, BHS has hosted a volunteer-operated homeless shelter since 1983.
