The Downhill Lodge at Tahoe Donner is blitzen into the new year! Along with project team members from Bull Stockwell Allen and SierraCon, Inc., Buehler celebrated the topping out of structural steel Monday, Dec. 23 for this new 25,000 SF ski lodge. The design incorporates several cutting-edge considerations, including DuraFuse moment frame connections and CoreBrace BRBFs for seismic resilience. Fabreeka thermal break connections were also added to inhibit icy temperatures from entering the lodge through the structure, which is highlighted by architecturally exposed structural steel elements and a heavy timber roof system. The new lodge will reduce crowding and expand the restaurant and bar, provide space for an indoor ski school, and accommodate skiers of all abilities with its inclusive infrastructure. Buehler was well represented at several national conferences last month! At the DBIA 2024 National Conference & Expo in Dallas, Jason Horwedel participated in a lively panel discussion on "Optimizing Team Decision-Making and Risk Allocation with Progressive Design Build", while Scott Hooker shared insights on “Interdisciplinary Empathy”. In Chicago, Kimberly Guzman took part in the inaugural AISC Emerging Professionals Program, which introduces fresh perspectives and new voices to the steel industry.  In the Pacific Time Zone, the annual NCSEA Summit was in full swing in Las Vegas. Several Buehler engineers were in attendance, including NCSEA Past-President Ryan Kersting, who presented on the NEHRP Functional Recovery Provisions being developed for model building codes. We want to recognize this year's amazing interns who helped Buehler! In addition to supplying fearsome foosball competition, interns such as Sachi Goli, Alexandra Kersting, Joe Mangan, Dominic Valentine, Thomas Burt, Justin Crawford, Jasper Mors, Lauryn Wojcik, and Paul Lille provided invaluable assistance by performing calculations, drawing details, and reviewing building codes. We strive to provide all student interns with hands-on learning experiences that include tours of job sites, where interns got a chance to observe everything from foundation pours to cladding installation. Breaking ground in San Mateo County! Last month, Buehler engineers Colin Blaney S.E., Afshin Shafa, and Alexander Ameri were on site at the groundbreaking ceremony for the North County Wellness Center, a 77,000 SF building that expands vital services to the San Mateo County community. The innovative facility will house a medical clinic, Human Services Agency, and satellite offices for County officials, making essential health and social services easier to access. Designed with a focus on sustainability, the North County Wellness Center features Mass Timber components, which contribute to the LEED certification goals and align with the County's Green Building Policy. Solar panels, EV chargers, and sustainable materials also help reduce the carbon footprint. Bringing this community-boosting project to life would not be possible without such a great project team, including SmithGroup and XL Construction. Students at Evergreen Valley College kicked off the school year with a brand new Student Services Complex! Described by EVC as “the architectural gem of campus,” the all-glass facade features an intricate radial geometry that required precision engineering and individualized detailing. Although it visually reads as a single building, the complex is actually two structures with distinct lateral systems separated by a seismic joint. This iconic complex serves as the new gateway to campus and provides students with a singular place for all of their administrative needs.
