This Thanksgiving, we’re highlighting the critical work the state has left to do to advance equitable education and workforce outcomes for Native American and Alaska Native Californians. Key insights from our research show that they: ➡️ Are less likely to enroll in college than the state average (57% vs. 66%). ➡️ Are only half as likely to attain a bachelor’s degree as the state average (17% vs. 35%). ➡️ Are less likely to earn a living wage than the state average (45% vs. 64%). https://lnkd.in/gAY-8wA5 California Competes’s work to understand and strengthen students’ college and career pathways is a step toward shared prosperity for these communities. #ICYMI: We learned from comebacker students (those who paused their college journey and later returned) that academic probation policies and practices pose barriers to re-enrollment and college completion: https://lnkd.in/gVaZ_Ard So, we dug deeper into how to address these challenges and outlined four steps institutions can take to reform academic probation to promote student success. California Competes Senior Researcher David Radwin and The California Alliance for Student Parent Success Advisory Committee Member Krystle P. recently presented at the Student Senate for California Community Colleges’ Fall Advocacy Academy. They shared key findings from our Student Parent Almanac (https://lnkd.in/g7YTRfwg) and how the data guided our work to advance policy change, which ultimately led to the enactment of #AB2458, the GAINS for Student Parents Act. Now onto this new law’s implementation—learn more: https://lnkd.in/gM9H_G3q

📚 Honored to have co-presented today with David Radwin from California Competes on the GAINS for Student Parents Act! As an Student Parent Advisor for CA Alliance for Student Parent Success and SPARK Fellow, it was powerful seeing how data and advocacy intersect to support our 400,000+ student parents in the state. Student parents are largely concentrated in community colleges as there are 281,000 in CCC. That means 19% or 1 in 5 students are parents in community colleges. Thank you to everyone who joined us - together, we're turning research into action! #StudentParentSuccess #EquityInEducation #StudentParentAdvocacy #SSCCC #AdvocacyAcademy2024 #StudentParentEmpowerment #StudentParents #CommunityCollege #CaliforniaCompetes #EdTrustWest #SPARKCollaborative #CaliforniaHigherEd #ParentingStudents #CACommunityColleges

New analysis from Richard Davis Jr. and Edward Conroy at New America examines the rates of homelessness for student parents nationwide and its impact on them and their families. This clear call to meet student parents’ housing needs echoes a key principle of The California Alliance for Student Parent Success’s policy agenda. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gRPmn6Rt
✍️ I’m happy to share my first New America blog post, co-authored with my colleague, Edward Conroy! 🏠 In The Harsh Reality of Parenting Student Homelessness, we examine striking data from the latest NPSAS survey: nearly 7% of parenting college students experience homelessness—a rate alarmingly close to that of all undergraduate students. This stark reality exposes critical gaps in our public safety net and the urgent need to improve our public benefits programs to support college students. 🚫 While many housing support programs are designed to support families with children, they often fall short for parenting students, who are striving to achieve economic security for themselves and their children under incredibly challenging circumstances. 👩👦 Addressing this gap is essential—not only for the success of student parents but for the long-term stability and prosperity of future generations. 📝 This is the first blog post in a series I’m leading, and I hope it sparks meaningful conversations and drives actionable policy change to better support parenting students. Read it below and I’d love to hear your thoughts. #parentingstudents #studentparents #housing #studentbasicneeds #highereducation #publicpolicy #collegeattainment #economicsecurity
