What happens when private equity (PE) firms acquire health care service providers, like hospitals and nursing homes? CHCF commissioned Harvard researchers to synthesize the available data and academic research. They found that acquisitions are associated with: - higher costs for patients and insurers - lower patient satisfaction - mixed changes to operating costs - mixed to worse quality of care - worse financial outcomes for entities being acquired In California, acquisitions of health care providers totaled $4.31 billion dollars between 2019-2023. PE firms now own approximately 6% of private hospitals in California. https://lnkd.in/gR6k5Dwb

Improving California's health care system, so it works for all Californians.
About us
The California Health Care Foundation (CHCF) is dedicated to advancing meaningful, measurable improvements in the way the health care delivery system provides care to the people of California, particularly those with low incomes and those whose needs are not well served by the status quo. We work to ensure that people have access to the care they need, when they need it, at a price they can afford. CHCF informs policymakers and industry leaders, invests in ideas and innovations, and connects with changemakers to create a more responsive, patient-centered health care system. As Pride Month draws to a close, health care remains a huge obstacle for many Black Californians who identify as LGBTQ+. In order to make a more equitable health care landscape in CA, health systems and policymakers should actively integrate Black LGBTQ+ Californians into designing and implementing new health-related policies, practices, and resources. California is home to one of the largest populations of adults and youth who identify as transgender in the US. But in more ways than one, the health care system is failing California’s Black transgender and nonbinary communities, who face a mountain of hurdles when it comes to finding medical providers offering inclusive and affirming patient-centered care. This Pride Month, read about how California can address these issues with empathetic, inclusive, patient-centered care: https://lnkd.in/giGTJY7G

Strategic Communications Executive | Delivering communications with data and storytelling to advance public policy and compel action
One of the best things we do at the California Health Care Foundation is make sure decision-makers have accurate information and facts on health care issues, especially on Medi-Cal, the state’s health insurance program for Californians with low incomes. For example, did you know Medi-Cal covers 39% of all births in California? That's a big deal as state and local health leaders find ways to improve maternal care and ensure children have quality care from their earliest days. Learn more in CHCF's newest Medi-Cal facts and figures almanac about how state leaders can implement strategies to address disparities in access, quality, and outcomes of care for Medi-Cal enrollees of color. #facts #healthcare #MediCal

University of California is doing amazing work to strengthen our behavioral health workforce. Don't miss the video on their psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner program! https://lnkd.in/gcnWrHEC
So glad to see this story on the UC nursing schools' collaboration to train more psychiatric mental health health nurse practitioners (PMHNPs) through an innovative, mostly-online curricular model. California's on track to have 150 new PMHNPs by next year! The fact that they stood it up during COVID makes it even more impressive. California Health Care Foundation is proud to have supported this project -- we even made a movie about it! https://lnkd.in/gg7g7qrq

Community Health Workers (CHWs) play an increasingly critical role in the U.S. healthcare delivery system, and there is growing momentum for CHW interventions to drive even more impact on health outcomes and costs. Significant investments in workforce development and rapidly increasing Medicaid coverage for CHW services mean there is a growing CHW workforce with access to reimbursement dollars. Yet most CHWs and the community-based organizations (CBOs) that employ them have no experience submitting healthcare claims. This is where Pear Suite comes in. Pear Suite’s SaaS platform enables the rapidly growing CHW workforce to standardize the data they collect, improve care navigation, and access reimbursement. The company partners with payers and CBOs to address the social drivers of health in a scalable, cost-effective, and person-centered way. Today Rock Health Capital is announcing our most recent investment in Pear Suite, alongside Flare Capital Partners, AARP, and California Health Care Foundation. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gerrfR2u

🎙️ New Episode Alert: Making Waves in Health Tech 🌊 We're excited to share our latest episode featuring Motivo Health, an innovative platform addressing a critical gap in mental health care. Did you know? 57% of therapists who obtain a master’s degree in counseling never get licensed because they cannot find a clinical supervisor or cannot afford one. This means we are losing more than half of our supply of therapists. Motivo Health is trying to change that. In this episode, we’ll hear from Rachel McCrickard, LMFT, who founded Motivo Health after her personal struggles finding clinical supervision in rural areas. Highlights 🔹 Motivo Health is on a mission to increase the number of licensed mental health providers by providing accessible, affordable clinical supervision with a supervisor network of more than 1,200 clinicians. 🔹 Many of Motivo Health’s supervisors work in safety-net settings, and 70% of the company’s current supervisees reside in a Mental Health Professional Shortage Area. Listen now and join the conversation on increasing mental health care accessibility! https://lnkd.in/gqjW_m24 #MakingWavesInHealthTech #MentalHealthAccess #HealthcareInnovation #DigitalHealth

Disparities in health care represent real, life-threatening problems for millions of Californians. For example, one in six Latino/x Californians reported being in fair or poor health. In 2021, 18% reported not having a usual source of care, and 15% delayed care.
