  • “This administration is going to be prioritizing resource extraction, rather than protecting our public land.” Those words from Linda Castro ring even more true now, as President Trump’s second term begins with a call to "Drill, baby, drill" in his inauguration speech. We’ve seen before how Trump’s policies put California’s national monuments at risk, and there’s every reason to believe he’ll target them again. From the Mojave to the Sierra, the fight to protect these lands and the cultures they sustain is just beginning. Read more about what’s at stake in this article from SFGate. Then, visit CalWild.org to learn how you can help defend California’s national monuments. The battle is far from over. • Mark Green, our incredible Executive Director, had the honor of standing with the President after the designation of Chuckwalla and Sáttítla as National Monuments. These lands represent more than their beautiful views — they're cultural heritage, ecological diversity, and a commitment to protecting spaces for future generations. This recognition underscores the importance of preserving wild spaces for generations to come.

“It’s the location of our creation narrative—it’s holy lands.” Brandy McDaniels of the Pit River Tribe captured the profound importance of the newly designated Sátíttla Highlands National Monument. This historic protection of 848,000 acres isn’t just about preserving wilderness—it’s about honoring sacred spaces, healing generational traumas, and reclaiming stewardship of lands vital to the Pit River people’s identity. Sátíttla’s federal designation represents a victory for the Tribe and a coalition of environmental and community advocates. Beyond conservation, this milestone highlights the growing recognition of Indigenous leadership and traditional ecological knowledge as essential to the future of climate resilience and sustainable land management. • Big news for California’s public lands! Today, President Biden designated the Chuckwalla National Monument, protecting over 600,000 acres. This historic achievement reflects years of collaboration among Tribes, activists, nonprofit organizations, and local leaders. A huge thank you to Congressman Raul Ruiz and Senator Alex Padilla for their leadership in making this a reality. As CalWild’s Linda Castro said, “We are delighted to join these constituencies in thanking President Biden for protecting California’s desert public lands for us and for future generations to visit and enjoy.” Stay tuned as we celebrate this milestone and continue working for more conservation victories!
