A packed 2024 Fall @NCATS #CTSA meeting has been engaging, enlightening, and inspiring! It was great to see so many colleagues talk about how they are impacting health of people within their communities and across the nation. Topics of primary care PBRNs, Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI)/CTSA collaborations, health equity, translational research and translational science, and where and how AI and LLMs fit. Great discussion this morning with other CTSA Hubs at the CTSA Fall Meeting regarding the difference between Translational Research and Translational Science. The National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS) at NIH defines: ‘Translation’ as the process of turning observations in the laboratory, clinic and community into interventions that improve the health of individuals and communities – from diagnostics, preventions, and treatments to medical procedures and behavioral changes. ‘Translational research’ as the endeavor to traverse a particular step of the translational process for a particular target or disease. ‘Translational science’ (TS) is the field of investigation focused on understanding the scientific and operational principles underlying each step of the translational process. While translational research targets specific diseases or conditions, translational science takes a broader approach, addressing the scientific and operational challenges that are common across many, if not all, diseases. These shared obstacles slow down and hinder the development of effective new treatments. The CTSC is committed to helping researchers with clinical and translational science understanding through innovative collaboration, funding, and training opportunities.
