Unforeseen life events caused Chenghui Li, Ph.D., from UAMS - University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, to put her research on hold for two years. But since returning in 2020 she has authored or co-authored 33 published papers, thanks largely to a National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS) re-entry grant. Innovating research training, tools, and processes to help turn scientific discoveries into health benefits.
About us
Under NCATS’ leadership, the Clinical and Translational Science Awards (CTSA) Program supports a national network of medical research institutions — called Hubs ― that work together to improve the translational research process to get more treatments to more patients more quickly. The Hubs collaborate locally and regionally to catalyze innovation in training, research tools, and processes. CTSA Program support enables research teams including scientists, patient advocacy organizations, and community members to tackle system-wide scientific and operational problems in clinical and translational research that no one team can overcome. To learn more about the CTSA Program goals, head to https://ncats.nih.gov/ctsa/about and check out https://ncats.nih.gov/ctsa/funding to learn about the mechanisms to achieve these goals. This page is run by the CTSA Coordination, Communication, and Operations Support (CCOS) Center. Posts and engagements do not necessarily represent the views of NCATS, NIH.

#CTSAProgram Research: Scientists have discovered a mutation in SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, that plays a key role in its ability to infect the central nervous system. This collaborative study between scientists at Northwestern University and the University of Illinois Chicago may help scientists understand these neurological symptoms and the mystery of “long COVID,” and lead to future potential treatments to protect and clear the virus from the brain. A report from the NASEM Health and Medicine Division addresses the responsible use of race and ethnicity in biomedical research. The report’s recommendations and resources provide guidance on how to decide whether to use race and ethnicity, characterize datasets, identify related variables, include overlooked groups, and support community engagement. The practice of evaluation creates opportunities to adapt, improve and respond. This publication in the Journal of Clinical and Translational Science details the impact of evaluators and their roles within the CTSA consortium. Takeaways include CTSA consortium knowledge in evaluation, best practices, evidenced-based recommendations for evaluation practice (at both national and group-level), and prompt use by other large evaluation consortia. Are you interested in improving your team’s processes to make collaborative science more effective and efficient? MICHR (Michigan Institute for Clinical & Health Research) is actively recruiting for a #NIH funded study: Information Management Prototype for Clinical and Translational Research (IMPACT-CTR). This study will evaluate tools and strategies teams use to conduct collaborative translational research. Findings will be used to develop a learning module to help teams improve their approach to information management.
