Cedar LNG
Oil and Gas
A Haisla-led project powered by renewable electricity, with an industry-leading low carbon footprint
About us
The Cedar LNG Project is a partnership between the Haisla Nation and Pembina Pipeline Corporation to develop a floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) facility in Kitimat, British Columbia, Canada, within the traditional territory of the Haisla Nation. Strategically positioned to leverage Canada’s abundant natural gas supply and BC’s liquefied natural gas (LNG) infrastructure, Cedar LNG will be powered by renewable electricity from BC Hydro, making it one of the lowest carbon intensity LNG facilities in the world. “The Cedar LNG project will be the largest First Nation-owned infrastructure project in Canada, creating jobs, contracting and other economic opportunities for the Haisla Nation, the community of Kitimat, neighbouring Indigenous Nations, and the local region,” says Smith. “Cedar LNG represents long-term growth for our region in a way that protects our land and environment, and we are excited to see the project move forward in its environmental assessment process with innovative technology and reduced environmental footprint.”

Because of the Haisla Nation’s determination and environmental leadership, Cedar LNG will make the most significant mark on economic reconciliation ever in Canada. Cedar LNG is proud to be the first Indigenous majority-owned LNG facility in the world, and to be a part of the Haisla Nation’s story as they build a prosperous future for their community, “as owners and decision-makers”. #NDTR2024 #TruthAndReconciliation #ProsperityForAll
As we recognize Canada’s 4th annual National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, I encourage us all to think beyond the common ways we commemorate this day – wearing orange, attending a luncheon, making a social post, and listening and learning. If we are to overcome the challenges ahead of us as a country, we must be ready to commit to do more and take meaningful action. Reconciliation today – nearly 20 years since the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada Calls to Action was released – means enabling Indigenous people to truly participate in the Canadian economy – as owners and decision makers, not just participants. This means providing communities with access to government funding programs, financing and other benefits that many other non-Indigenous industry players have received for years. We recognize that to be treated as equal, we also need to be prepared to take on significant risks associated with developing major projects. Something that the Haisla have proven with Cedar LNG, alongside our partner Pembina, that Indigenous communities are willing, and highly capable of doing. When I look back to what we - the Haisla Nation have achieved, I will not rest until any community who wants to pursue projects like ours, has the ability to find the right partners, get a seat at the table, access to capital, and to be true owners in their economic future. There is no longer an alternative for us.

“…the Haisla Nation, with our partner Pembina, have made history as the world’s first Indigenous community to develop an LNG facility as majority owners. Because of our Nation’s determination and environmental leadership, Cedar LNG will make the most significant mark on economic reconciliation ever in our country. With Cedar LNG, we have proven that Indigenous communities can successfully forge a path to economic independence and generational prosperity. We have created a model for how sustainable energy development should be done, with Indigenous Nations as owners, balancing environmental interests with global demand for cleaner energy." – Crystal Smith, Chief Councillor of the Haisla Nation. #cedarlng #pembinapipeline #HaislaNation #CanadianLNG #arcresources Pembina Pipeline Corporation Haisla Nation ARC Resources Ltd.

Cedar LNG today announced that it has issued a Notice to Proceed to the engineering, procurement, and construction contractors following the finalization of long-term commercial offtake agreements. These critical milestones allow the project to proceed to secure financing, which is required prior to making a final investment decision, expected by the middle of 2024. “Today’s achievements mark an exciting time for our Nation as we seek to make Cedar LNG – the world’s lowest carbon and first Indigenous majority-owned LNG Facility – a reality in the coming months,” said Crystal Smith, Chief Councillor for Haisla Nation. “I am incredibly grateful to our Nation, all levels of government, Pembina and all our partners who have supported our journey to advance a project that protects our environmental and cultural values, while delivering prosperity for decades to come.” https://lnkd.in/ddT-pkPB #CedarLNG #HaislaNation #PembinaPipeline #ARCResources Haisla Nation Pembina Pipeline Corporation ARC Resources Ltd.
