Our children are facing a mental health crisis. 1 in 5 youth experience mental health challenges, yet lack of access to support leaves them struggling in silence. This crisis is further compounded by racial disparities within our education systems. Students of color are disproportionately affected by mental health challenges, yet often lack access to culturally responsive support and resources. This continues to have a devastating impact on their academic success, well-being, and future potential. Educators and mental health professionals within schools are on the frontlines, without the critical resources to provide the needed support. Every child deserves to feel valued and supported in their learning environments, and all other places. That's why we're launching the “Our Right to Smile” campaign, aimed at providing critical resources and support to educators, school-based mental health professionals, and youth. Dismantling Racism, Transforming Communities
About us
Center for Racial Justice in Education trains and empowers educators to dismantle patterns of racism and injustice in schools and communities. We envision a world where all young people learn and thrive in racially equitable and empowering educational spaces free from racial bias and discrimination. In our early years, we worked directly with students, teaching them to “cross borders” and understand identity, diversity and social justice. We later grew to train educators (including K-12 teachers and administrators as well as others engaged in youth development, and parents) to build educational institutions that foster racially equitable outcomes, and ensure that all students have safe, inclusive, and culturally responsive spaces to learn. Our trainings support educators in: 1) deepening their knowledge about the history of race and racism in the US; 2) strengthening their analysis of how racial oppression, privilege and identity affect their lives, their teaching, and their students lives; and 3) building educational communities rooted in racial justice.

Today, on the 60th anniversary of the historic 1964 Civil Rights Act, we had the privilege of joining The African American Policy Forum for a special #FreedomSummer homeroom event titled "Doubling Down on DEI: No U-Turn on Equity." As we reflect upon the invaluable contributions of those who have come before us, we unreservedly assert the need to collectively persist in our fight for racial justice. Thank you to the amazing team at the Brooklyn Public Library for inviting Center for Racial Justice in Education to join the Freedom to Read Teen Ambassadors program. We are grateful for the opportunity to facilitate a conversation with Teen Ambassadors about the impact of banned books and censorship. Through this program, teens become advocates for intellectual freedom through civic engagement in their schools, libraries, and communities. Center for Racial Justice in Education was honored to be a part of this incredible initiative. Our recent conversation centered "All Boys Aren't Blue: A Memoir-Manifesto" by George M. Johnson. #freedomtoread #intellectualfreedom #teenambassadors #communitybuilding #youthempowerment

Today is #EqualPayDay, which marks how long it takes for women to earn the same amount of money men made in the previous year. This #WageGap robs women of HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS of dollars throughout a lifetime. Equal pay would be life-changing for family caregivers and women everywhere.

For #WomensHistoryMonth, we honor the contributions of women educators who have fought and advocated for a better world for the children under their care and we affirm that every child—across race and all identities—should feel valued, respected and safe. The daughter of formerly enslaved parents, Mary McLeod Bethune became one of the most important Black educators, civil and women’s rights leaders and government officials of the twentieth century. The college she founded set educational standards for today’s Black colleges, and her role as an advisor to President Franklin Delano Roosevelt gave African Americans an advocate in government. “If I have a legacy to leave my people, it is my philosophy of living and serving.” Learn more about the remarkable life and legacy of Dr. Bethune: https://lnkd.in/gDa5_wdT https://lnkd.in/dJ47AVJ
