On Thursday, the last working day of 2024 at The University of Western Australia, had a lovely time cycling down to meet Johannes Wolfram Debler at Centre for Crop and Disease Management at Curtin University to learn some new sequencing techniques! What a wonderful science community in Western Australia, I am so incredibly lucky to get a live and work in this paradise.

During my time in Australia, I got the opportunity to lead a workshop at the Centre for Crop and Disease Management at Curtin University in Perth (the capital of Western Australia). I was graciously hosted by Fatima Naim, who helped me coordinate a three-day workshop on my confocal image analysis pipeline including sample preparation, confocal microscopy image capturing and image processing. This was a great experience and helped me improve my own technique before publishing it in the Molecular Plant Microbe Interaction (MPMI) journal! After workshops each day, I was lucky enough to enjoy the beautiful beaches in Perth thanks to Fatima Naim!

💡 Pawsey Weekly Wrap: Sustainability, Collaboration, and exciting Quantum Discoveries. We took our time to share this since yesterday, quantum took centre stage. #WrapUp 🌞 Managing Energy During WA's Heatwave Last week, Perth faced scorching temperatures that strained WA's south-west power grid. In response, the Pawsey team worked diligently to manage our power consumption by powering down unused compute nodes with no impact on researchers.🌱 🎓 Welcoming Hilary Hanahoe from Research Data Alliance Europe On Monday, we had the honour of hosting Hilary Hanahoe, the Research Data Alliance Secretary General, during her visit to Australia for ICRI 2024 in Brisbane. She took the opportunity to come down to Western Australia and tour our facilities to learn more about Pawsey Supercomputing Research Centre. 🌾 Future Drought Fund Visit On Thursday, we welcomed 25 members of the Future Drought Fund, including farmers, grower representatives, and government agencies, to our facilities. The visit was led by Curtin University's Centre for Crop and Disease Management (CCDM) and was hosted in our Vis Room. 🤝 In Other Engagements Mark Stickells AM attended the Committee for Perth End-of-Year Celebration and also participated in the IT Leadership Breakfast hosted by WA Data Science Innovation Hub (WADSIH). 🔬 Quantum Workshop for High School Students Yesterday, we hosted an inspiring quantum workshop for students in Years 10, 11, & 12. They kicked off their school holidays by exploring quantum technology, even learning to program their first quantum algorithms. 💻Quantum WA: Where today meets tomorrow After the workshop with the students, we brought together leading experts from research, industry, and infrastructure to explore Western Australia's growing quantum ecosystem; participants learned about the latest developments at the Pawsey Supercomputing Quantum Computing Innovation Hub and WA's quantum research ecosystem and opportunities. See you at the next wrap of the week, and stay safe! #sustainability #quantumtechnology #research #innovation #collaboration #pawsey #quantumcomputing #science #wa #stem #technology #education #quantumwa

I’m incredibly grateful to have received the Adelaide Graduate Research School Travel Grant, which allows me to collect data for my PhD project in Western Australia. The image data collected during this trip will be processed using an Object-Detection Machine Learning model to further characterize the head loss trait in barley crops. Thank you to Dion Bennett, Usman IJAZ, @Stacey Williams, and the Australian Grain Technologies team for coordinating the field trials and welcoming me at the Northam node. Your dedication and hard work, especially in the hot final days of harvest, are truly inspiring! On my second day in Perth, I had the privilege of visiting Murdoch University/ CCFI | SABC, The University of Western Australia, and Curtin University/ Centre for Crop and Disease Management. It was fantastic to reconnect with A/Prof Ryan Whitford and learn more about his hybrid wheat breeding work. I also had the chance to meet some incredible young plant scientists in WA, especially the talented Vietnamese cohort and learn more about the research they're conducting - Viet Dang, Diem Ly, Thien Tran, Gilang Bintang Fajar Suhono, Chau Anh Cao, Viet-Cuong Han. Your warm welcome made me feel right at home – I look forward to hosting you in Adelaide when you visit!

Today’s Drought Resilience Field Tour, following yesterday's Showcase, sparked meaningful discussions as participants visited three sites showcasing diverse projects supported by the #WADroughtHub through funding from the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry and the #FutureDroughtFund. A big thank you to our hosts: Dr Julia Easton (Centre for Crop and Disease Management, Curtin University) showed us the Yield Profitability Research Dashboard, which combines machinery yield data with economic models to analyse within-paddock variability. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gxZzii4v Nick Stamatiou (Whole.) shared how his WINX processing technology enhances nutrient bioavailability in food and transforms agricultural waste into innovative feedstock. Find out more: https://lnkd.in/gQyA37YH Graeme Roscic (Roscic Estates, Swan Valley) graciously opened his vineyard, where Dr Jo Wisdom (Acting Hub Director) explained how converting cover crops into green mulch enhances vineyard floor management, reduces water use and evaporation, and improves fruit quality. Read more: https://lnkd.in/gVHJ33kD Thank you to everyone who contributed to making this field tour a memorable exploration of innovation and collaboration in drought resilience! Also pictured: 📸 Field tour participants 📸 (L-R) Dale Park (Drought Hubs Advisory Committee member), Rikki Foss (GGA Chief Executive Officer), Graham Smith (GGA Board member and SW WA Hub Steering Committee member), Kieran Macdonell (Drought Hubs Management Director, DAFF), Deb Turner (Drought Hubs Management Assistant Director, DAFF), Brent Finlay (Hubs Advisory Committee Chair and FDF Consultative Committee Chair)
