About us
Chapin Hall has, since its inception in 1985 as a research and policy center, focused on a mission of improving the well-being of children and youth, families, and their communities. We do this through policy research—by developing and testing new ideas, generating and analyzing information, and examining policies, programs, and practices across a wide range of service systems and organizations. Chapin Hall takes a broad perspective, embracing an interest in policies that promote the well-being of all children and youth while devoting special attention to those facing significant problems.

These past 5 years, Senior Policy Analyst Stephanie Armendariz's contributions have been many and varied. Her leadership in envisioning and developing a Chapin Hall community of practice for kinship navigation services resulted in a series of important policy briefs, conference presentations, and on-going support for colleagues working in this area. Stephanie is an effective leader who is highly valued by partners, generously shares her knowledge and talents with others, and expertly cultivates new work. Many of us have benefitted from Stephanie's master project planning and presentation skills. Staff especially appreciate how she intentionally supports new staff in their development. We are excited to announce season 3 of Overloaded: Understanding Neglect, a podcast series from the Institute for Child and Family Well-being. In season 3, we confront the complex challenges of poverty, social isolation, and systemic failures where, too often, overloaded families are expected to beat the odds that have been stacked against them. We then explore how we might change the conditions so that we improve the odds for children and families to thrive and to achieve our north star. Through conversations with national and local experts and changemakers, we dive into the innovative ideas that aspire to transform our systems through community leadership, build an aligned and comprehensive primary prevention ecosystem, and unlock the power of lived experience through true collaboration. We believe neglect is preventable. Subscribe to the podcast and listen to this season’s trailer today! Then join us for the season premiere on January 8th. Chapin Hall's latest research, in collaboration with Illinois Department of Children and Family Services found that many #ChildWelfare workers plan to stay in their roles despite emotional strain at work: https://lnkd.in/g6hbvMmM The report offers recommendations for additional mental health supports and enhanced supervisory relationships to help these workers be well and do good work. We found female and minority workers face more negative professional experiences, which means we need tailored support for different employees. #NLP #ML #AI

Check out this article on the Dutch Infant Crying & Parent Well-being Screening Tool, which was developed by Tiffany Burkhardt and Leslie Katch. The tool was found to be a valid and reliable way to identify parents struggling with crying infants! It's important to identify struggling parents so we can get them the support they need to have good mental health.
🥳 Feest! As many folks prepare to celebrate Thanksgiving tomorrow, let’s take a moment to reflect on the fact that the bountiful harvests we share often come from rural areas where many young people—especially LGBTQ youth—face significant challenges. In these communities, LGBTQ youth experience higher rates of homelessness, discrimination, and mental health crises due to limited access to affirming services and safe housing. Every day—especially during Youth Homelessness Awareness Month—we must shine a light on these inequities. Family and community acceptance, expanded access to resources, and innovative solutions to reach geographically isolated youth are critical steps toward creating a brighter future. It’s not just a seasonal issue, it’s a year-round effort to ensure every young person feels valued, supported and safe. Let’s use this season of gratitude to amplify the voices of vulnerable youth and commit to building a society where no one is left behind.
