Yesterday EPA published its final risk evaluation supplement for 1,4-dioxane, under #TSCA. The Agency determined there are unreasonable risks to industrial and commerical workers not wearing PPE. EPA also determined unreasonable risks to the general population from exposure via drinking water sourced from water contaminated with 1,4-dioxane that is discharged from industrial facilities or from products containing the chemical that are washed down the drain. 1,4-Dioxane is important to many industries; let's see how EPA proposes to manage these risks, an action which may take another year.

#EPA released a review of major environmental laws including #TSCA and #FIFRA, describing its policies on incorporating New Approach Methods (#NAMs) into the laws' existing data requirements. While the Agency still relies on vertebrate testing to fulfill its mandate to protect human health and the environment, flexibility in these statutes provides a pathway for the incorporation of data from NAMs into decision making.

#FDA has published a final rule amending the bases for which a Food Contact Notification (#FCN) can be deemed no longer effective, and the procedures for doing so. In addition to FDA determining the food contact substance (FCS) is no longer safe for the intended use, an FCN can be revoked if it is no longer produced, supplied or used, or if the FCS is authorized by a food additive regulation or is the subject of a Threshold of Regulation (TOR) exemption. The amendment also establishes that the manufacturer/supplier of the FCS will have time to respond to a "no longer safe for intended use" determination to supply data or other support for the FCN. The final rule becomes effective on May 21, 2024. https://lnkd.in/eVA-QWWN
