The Chesapeake Bay Program's communications director Rachel Felver loves to hike. But it wasn't until she ended up in the hospital with a severe case of Coronavirus that she truly understood the value of time outdoors. Thanks to a decade of conservation work, the Potomac River headwaters in West Virginia are now one of the most productive brook trout patches south of Maine. Organizations such as Trout Unlimited and the USDA Forest Service have led this conservation effort, working with landowners and community leaders to repair streams, free up fish migration routes, and reduce agricultural pressure. “We have more flood resilient communities along the streams, we have healthier agricultural operations, we have sustainable fisheries,” said Dustin Wichterman of Trout Unlimited. #ChesapeakeBay #FlyFishing #CleanWater

The Chesapeake Bay Program has announced that an estimated 29.8% of the Chesapeake Bay and its tidal tributaries met water quality standards during the 2020-2022 assessment period. This is a slight increase from the previous assessment period when an estimated 28.1% of the Bay met water quality standards. Scientists attribute the slight improvement to higher levels of dissolved oxygen in the deep waters of the Chesapeake. However, water clarity in the shallow waters of the Bay remained poor due to a lower acreage of underwater grasses. #ChesapeakeBay #CleanWater

In 2024, the Baltimore Harbor's ecosystem earned a C letter grade, mostly due to the abundance of algae blooms forming in the water. For swimming, grades ranged from A+ by Fort McHenry, B- in the Inner Harbor, Fs in the waters by Baltimore Peninsula. Fish require dissolved oxygen (DO) to survive and DO levels were relatively high in the Harbor. The harbor earned a B in this category. For #NationalEstuariesWeek, let's hear it for the largest estuary in the United States and third largest in the world: The Chesapeake Bay! The Chesapeake Bay holds 18 trillion gallons of water and drains 64,000 square miles of land. It's the source of several commercial fisheries, a place to swim, fish and boat, and habitat to thousands of wildlife species. #ChesapeakeBay #CleanWater #Estuary
Why is the Chesapeake Bay so important?
