About us
The Chesapeake Research Consortium (CRC) aspires to fully enable its member institutions and the broader scientific community in the region to contribute effectively toward better understanding and management of Chesapeake Bay and its watershed. CRC aims to play a critical and central role in defining, coordinating, and disseminating the research and education needed to best contribute to the decision-making process for effective and sustainable management of the Chesapeake Bay, its watershed, and its living resources. In accomplishing this mission, CRC’s primary roles are to work cooperatively with its member institutions and with the various governmental agencies and non-governmental institutions comprising the long-standing Chesapeake Bay partnership.

Wayfinding—the ancient art of sea navigation without modern tools—is a central theme in Disney’s Moana films. In a recent NPR interview, Lehua Kamala, a member of the Polynesian Voyaging Society, explains that wayfinding is a practice that allows indigenous communities to connect with the ocean and natural world. That is exactly what CRC Roundtable speaker Nainoa Thompson, CEO of the Polynesian Voyaging Society, and others who circumnavigated the Pacific Ocean in 2023, set out to do. Want to learn more about Nainoa’s voyage, and how his experience might inform the way that we connect to the Chesapeake Bay? Register for the CRC Roundtable this Wednesday, December 18th, at 12pm! New agroforesting data just LEEKED! A collaborative study led by Penn State University and University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science, two of our member institutions, has identified optimal conditions and farming practices for cultivating wild leeks, or “ramps,” in an agroforest setting 🌱. Researchers mapped ideal growing conditions using field and modeling data, aiming to guide forest farmers and conserve this highly sought after native species. Researchers at Virginia Tech, one of our member institutions, are using soundscape 🔊 technology to detect the presence of invasive plants within restored streams. By listening to differences in frog, insect, and bird sounds, researchers hope to deduce which areas are inhabited by native plants, and which areas may have been infiltrated by invasives. This new technology could ultimately become a cost-effective tool for future remote monitoring. Read More: https://loom.ly/kMcvHlU Photo: Craig Newcomb #sustainablesolutions

It’s time to turn the tide on outdated water infrastructure! 🌊 With a nearly $370 million investment from the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), five states across the Chesapeake Bay watershed have received funding to upgrade antiquated infrastructure like lead pipes and sewer systems, as well as address harmful contaminants such as PFAS. These critical updates will ultimately aid in providing surrounding communities with cleaner, safer water. Read more: https://loom.ly/sqjjPxU Photo: Justin Sullivan/Getty Images

This month’s CRC Roundtable, centering around invasive blue catfish, is particularly timely as investments across the region seek to expand incentives to remove the troublemakers. Just this month, a Hampton, VA, seafood company was awarded a $247,000 grant to support a commercial blue catfish fishery. Want to learn more about the steps we can take to control the blue catfish population? Register for the CRC Roundtable TOMORROW, November 20th at 12pm!
