Are there any positives to take away from COP29? 🤨
Despite the urgent demands of the global majority, the "finance COP" has failed to deliver on the trillions of dollars needed to support adaptation, mitigation and loss & damage efforts in developing countries.
But I am leaving Baku holding onto the energy, ambition and hope that swelled from what BBC's Georgina Rannard described as 'always her favourite' space in the Blue Zone - the COP29 Children and Youth Pavilion ✊ 📣
Over the past two weeks, it's been a privilege to work alongside Jasmine Adams and Anna Guyer as part of the Greenhouse Communications team to:
1️⃣ Support children and young people from across the world to share their incredible stories of climate action and amplify their demands to a global audience.
We placed over 50 interviews and comments from our youth spokespeople - aged 10-35 - with international media including BBC, PA Media, POLITICO, the COP29 Daily Climate Show, Agencia, EFE and The National.
2️⃣ Campaign for all countries to adopt a Universal Youth Clause in their new national climate plans.
We connected youth experts with media and created two campaign films with Earth Minutes on the ground, amplifying the first ever pledge from the Ed Miliband and the UK government to meaningfully include youth in climate decision-making.
3️⃣ Demand the trillions of dollars in climate finance needed, as one united community of children and youth.
Through media statements, a campaign film, and a social media storm, we showed the world that anything less than a commitment to the trillions of dollars needed is – and continues to be – unacceptable.
We often say that children and young people are the leaders of tomorrow – but they are already stepping up in ways that our leaders can barely imagine. And as a young person, I have been continually inspired and uplifted by the people I have met and worked with – and I know this energy will continue far beyond COP29 to ensure there is 'nothing about us, without us'. 🙅♀️
