On January 15th, the Juvenile Justice Policy and Data (JJPAD) Board released its latest report that provides a detailed assessment of pretrial practices within the juvenile justice system in Massachusetts, featuring a review of research and best practices and recommendations for improvement. The report’s methodology included a review of current MA policy, data analysis, CBI subcommittee presentations, national research and interviews with professionals, stakeholders and those with lived experience in the juvenile system. CfJJ commends the JJPAD Board and CBI subcommittee for their work on this important report and encourages system leaders to prioritize implementation of its recommendations. About us
Citizens for Juvenile Justice (CfJJ) is the only independent, non-profit, statewide organization working exclusively to improve the juvenile justice system in Massachusetts. We advocate, convene, conduct research, and educate the public on important juvenile justice issues. We believe that both children in the system and public safety are best served by a fair and effective system that recognizes the ways children are different from adults and focuses primarily on their rehabilitation.

"Others, like the national Youth Advocate Programs, Inc. and Boston’s Roca, Inc., pair young people with histories of violence or delinquency with mentors and advocates who offer therapy and connect them to education and employment services. What these programs have in common is evidence to support their effectiveness. As The Sentencing Project's Richard Mendel explains: “The research is clear that kids who are placed in one of these programs tend to do better than those who are sent to a juvenile facility. And the group that does best of all is those who are diverted from the system entirely.'" https://lnkd.in/edDiEbEs

Without vital documents like IDs, birth certificates, or proof of residency, they are often at greater risk of detention and deportation." "Research by Citizens For Juvenile Justice (CFJJ) has shown that youth are twice as likely to be arrested during periods of school suspension or expulsion. In response to this issue, the Healey-Driscoll Administration allocated nearly $200,000 through the Title II Formula Grant Program to support nonprofit organizations, local police, and state agencies working to prevent at-risk youth from entering the juvenile justice system. The funding is designed to improve outcomes for adolescents through community-based organizations that offer essential services and support." https://lnkd.in/edzJvcGB
