ICYMI: An article in StateScoop highlights a new audit showing that none of the U.S. state websites currently meet the upcoming DOJ web accessibility standards—an urgent call to action for government agencies. The findings, published in the Web Almanac, spotlight accessibility gaps across state homepages and key pages. CivicActioner Mike Gifford, CPWA, open standards and practices lead at CivicActions, authored the government accessibility section, providing a critical “state of accessibility” snapshot using Google Lighthouse scores. As Mike notes, “To meet the minimum requirements for accessibility, this has to be 100%. And it’s not.” 🌐 With the DOJ’s new requirements set to take effect in 2025, states must act quickly to ensure digital spaces are inclusive for all citizens. 🔗 Read the full article on StateScoop: https://lnkd.in/g2GrT6KF At CivicActions, we help governments meet—and exceed—accessibility standards with expertise and care. Let’s build digital spaces that work for everyone. #DigitalAccessibility #GovTech #InclusiveWeb #a11y #accessibility

We are excited to announce that as core maintainers of DKAN, DKAN is now an authorized Digital Public Good and has been added to the Digital Public Goods Alliance (DPGA) DPG Registry! The goal of the DPGA and its registry is to promote digital public goods in order to create a more equitable world. Being recognized as a DPG increases the visibility, support for, and prominence of open projects that have the potential to tackle global challenges. To become a digital public good, all projects are required to meet the DPG Standard to ensure that projects truly encapsulate open source principles. DKAN is a powerful, community-driven open data platform. As a Drupal module, DKAN leverages Drupal's robust features to create modern, standards-focused, and API-first open data catalogs for the public good, including our clients Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services and Oak Ridge National Laboratory. For us, being recognized as a digital public good—defined as open source software, open data, open AI models, open standards, and open content that adhere to privacy and other applicable laws and best practices, do no harm, and help attain the SDGs—means contributing to a more equitable and open digital future. The Digital Public Goods Alliance is a multi-stakeholder initiative endorsed by the United Nations Secretary-General, working to accelerate the attainment of Sustainable Development Goals. At CivicActions, we're not just maintaining systems — we're modernizing them with sustainability at the forefront. On LINCS, for our client the U.S. Department of Education, our efforts to streamline hosting and consolidate resources have yielded significant results, reducing thousands in hosting expenses while enhancing ease of administration, security, and environmental impact. Recently, our team successfully decommissioned six EC2 instances across four main servers, marking a milestone that reflects years of collaborative effort and strategic planning: STAR Migration: The STAR course, previously under a separate contract, was migrated to the LINCS Courses server. This transition was enabled by substantial front-end development efforts. LINCS Learner Center Consolidation: LINCS Learner Center was fully consolidated into the main server, supported by expert Drupal theming and prior groundwork by former tech leads. Backup Optimization: AWS Backup, introduced in 2020, enables compliant backups that made a dedicated CPM server unnecessary. SMTP Server Transition: The migration of LINCS mail to Amazon SES in 2020 culminated in the formal decommissioning of the legacy mail server. These efforts also resulted in domain consolidation: two domains were eliminated in alignment with agency goals. We're proud of these strides in sustainability and efficiency — proof that innovation and environmental responsibility go hand in hand.
