ICYMI: An article in StateScoop highlights a new audit showing that none of the U.S. state websites currently meet the upcoming DOJ web accessibility standards—an urgent call to action for government agencies. The findings, published in the Web Almanac, spotlight accessibility gaps across state homepages and key pages. CivicActioner Mike Gifford, CPWA, open standards and practices lead at CivicActions, authored the government accessibility section, providing a critical “state of accessibility” snapshot using Google Lighthouse scores. As Mike notes, “To meet the minimum requirements for accessibility, this has to be 100%. And it’s not.” 🌐 With the DOJ’s new requirements set to take effect in 2025, states must act quickly to ensure digital spaces are inclusive for all citizens. 🔗 Read the full article on StateScoop: https://lnkd.in/g2GrT6KF At CivicActions, we help governments meet—and exceed—accessibility standards with expertise and care. Happy to have my work in the Accessibility Chapter of the HTTP Archive's Web Almanac featured in StateScoop. https://lnkd.in/e7e3SGP3 I belive that this is the first government-wide scan of USA states for web accessibility. The report averages over 34,000 state government web pages to create a meaningful snapshot of how inclusive government sites are. It is worth restating that 100% simply means all of the automated tests have passed, not that there are no accessibility errors. Automated tests can only cover about 1/3rd of WCAG 2.1 AA requirements. #Section508 #WCAG #GoogleLighthouse #axe #government #accessibility

The DOJ’s latest rule on web accessibility represents a crucial advancement for digital inclusivity in government services. This new mandate requires state and local governments to adhere to WCAG 2.1 level AA standards based on population size by April 2026 or 2027. Compliance with these standards is more than a legal requirement; it’s a commitment to serving all residents equitably. @CivicPlus #WebAccessibility #ADACompliance #GovTech https://lnkd.in/eEEfNycd

Have you been saying "this year we're going to make our site accessible" for the past few years? Or have you been thinking "I should really figure out what a color contrast ratio is" for months? Or wondering what you can do to widen your potential customer base? Here are 10 reasons why focusing on accessibility in 2025 is a good idea: 1. It's the right thing to do 2. It's not hard to get started and little improvements make a big difference 3. More people will be able to use your site and more people will want to keep using your site 4. More people using your site means more people can give your company money 5. You'll be ahead of lots of other companies - a 2024 study from WebAIM found that 95.9% of websites have at least one accessibility issue (link to the survey results https://lnkd.in/evZbnfVc ) 6. You'll be less likely to get in legal trouble for not having an accessible site 7. If you do any work in the EU then the European Accessibility Act (EAA) could impact you starting in June, and 6 months isn’t much time in Accessibility Land 8. You'll be more likely to be praised and less likely to get ranty comments on social media 9. You'll get to make the decisions about how to implement accessibility at your company instead of someone telling you how you have to do it 10. There are lots of great accessibility specialists looking for jobs and you can have their experience and expertise on your team! #Accessibility #A11y #AccessibilityMatters
