Climate Innovation Project

After 20 years in tech product innovation, research and service design, I've been motivated to spend the past year fully immersed in sustainability, climate science, and U.N. Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). My goal? To learn how to be part of the solution, not the problem. Last week in Helsinki, the Global Service Design Conference 2024 -#GSDC2024 - crystallized this journey for me. Through brilliant talks, panels, and keynotes, one message became clear: as designers, innovators, and researchers, our work is well-positioned to shape a better future—specifically, a regenerative one. Key insights from the conference: Alessandra Molderings-Enriconi's talk on "Agents of Systemic Change" emphasized our potential to drive meaningful transformation. Gaëlle Le Gélard Le Gelard explored scaling the Circular Economy through strategic service design leadership, showcasing practical applications of the tools of design for sustainability principles throughout the value chain. Anna Kholina "Designing Against Capitalism" challenged us to think critically about our roles as designers and leaders. She pushed back against the notion that "technology will save us" and the pursuit of "infinite growth on a finite planet"—both impossibilities we must reckon with. Coral Michelin, PhD Michelin's "Transformative Experiences Toward Regenerated Futures" welcomed us to the pluriverse. She taught us to reject false polarizations and reconnect with our natural systems, leaving us with a powerful mantra: "I am an interconnected being, through my work and actions I shape the world around us. I choose to shape it for good and for positive impact, for all of us." #GSDC2024 reinforced my understanding that as innovators and designers, we have a unique opportunity—and responsibility—to lead the charge in creating sustainable, regenerative solutions. It's not just about designing products or services; it's about designing a future where both humanity and our planet can thrive. I'm energized and committed to applying these principles in my work, and I invite fellow designers to join me in this crucial mission. Let's all harness our skills to design a world that works for everyone and let's all ignite the impact of sustainability heroes.
